Hardware, Software, Networking, Consulting, Training, Repairs... Whatever your computer problem, give me a call.

04/02/2021

In relation to my previous post, as I do not have much time to do hardware repairs I have accumulated a number of donated non-functioning laptops suitable for parts, along with an assortment of printers and scanners (some working, so not).

Anyone interested in them please message me.

29/01/2021

My apologies to everyone. I know I haven't posted in a while, but after a year of unemployment I now have a job and its been keeping me very very busy.

Unfortunately that means I will have little time to my PC repairs and the "PCs for Students in Need" project. For those of you who have left laptops with me for repair, I am working to finish them, or return them in what little time I have and will get back to you soon.

If you need your computer serviced you can continue to contact me. If I cannot accomodate you, I have an associate that I will refer you to who cares as much about helping people as I do.

Thank you all for your support and blessing.

Happy Holidays Everyone. As the year 2020 comes to an end I'm sure most of you will be as happy as I am to see it go with hope that 2021 will bring better times. Unfortunately, according to the latest news the worldwide shortage of computers is expected to last until 2022. In the past couple of years the computer industry saw a decline in computer sales only to see demand skyrocket this year beyond their manufacturing capacity fueled by COVID-19.

This coupled with the ongoing Forex shortage in Trinidad & Tobago means more and more we need to think more about repairing and upgrading our computers to extend their life instead of replacing them.

If you need assistance with upgrades, tune ups, or repairs please feel free to call me.

And please do not throw away your unwanted computers and accessories. Remember we still have thousands of children without computers to do their school work. And many people out of work who cannot afford to repair their old computers. Please donate your old equipment working or not...there are several individuals like myself accepting old equipment that can be repaired, or scrapped for parts to help out those in need.

Stay Safe and Happy Holidays.

PCs for Students in Need: 2020-12-19 Update

My right hand is still healing, thanks for the well wishes. I am still struggling to type though. Friday's Guardian had an article titled "$50 Million in devices donated - Minister". According to the Minister of Education businesses have pledged $50M to the Adopt a School program. A total of 21,810 devices pledged, but only 10,018 have been delivered on. Lets think about this for a moment... at an average price of $2300 ea. The government is also in the process of procuring another 20,000, which leaves 23,190 children out of the estimated 65,000 still without a laptop or tablet, if the business sector lives up to their pledges.. only half have done so at this time, and if they don't that takes the percentage of children without devices still more than half of the 65,000.

I urge everyone... donate an old computer, or sponsor a child. Raspberry PI 400 Desktop computers can be purchased for $100 USD. Hook it to a TV or Monitor, add a We**am, and you have a full remote learning solution. Or pay for a broken computer to be fixed... many older laptops can be restored to working condition for less than $1000 TT, far less than the typical cost to purchase one.

So Blessings to those businesses and individuals who have donated, and hopefully more will follow. And I would give applause to the Minister (if I could clap) for such hard work...

January is only weeks away..let's try to make the children's second term better.

Happy Holidays

PCs for Students in Need: Update 2020-12-17

Sorry to be away a bit, but was doing a little job for a neighbor and injured my right hand. Typing is proving difficult .

Christmas is just over a week away and I just want to remind everyone to keep those less fortunate in mind. If you are upgrading your computer or tablet please consider donating your old ones working or not... there are still many families in need.

If you don't have anything to donate but want to contribute a Raspberry Pi 400 computer is only $100 USD and can hook up to a TV or monitor to provide a great online learning platform...

For all those who have supported this project over the course of the year, THANK YOU. You made a difference.

Happy Holidays

PCs for Students in Need: 2020-12-08 Update
First I would like to thank Attorney Rondelle Keller, and the Central Community Credit Union Co-operative Society Ltd for donating laptops and tablets to needy children. You will be blessed.

By now I'm sure most if not all have heard that schools will remain virtual in January, and the MoE is going to reopen first with Standard 5 in February to provide SEA prep, just as they did this year. A wise and prudent course of action, testing the waters with a few before reopening for everyone. Right now the U.S. COVID-19 Pandemic is souring out of control and a significant part of the spread is being attributed to their schools reopening.

The MoE is working hard to try to solve the internet access and laptop/tablet shortfall. But we all need to continue to help. So please continue to donate your old desktops, laptops, and tablets as many people like myself are trying to repair and recondition them for those in need....bring a smile to a child's face with the give of a computer or tablet.

** And if you need your computer serviced give me a call.

Happy Holidays and God Bless

PCs for Students in Need: Nov 30, 2020

First let me congratulate the Good Shephard Primary School on their receipt of several computers for their students. It makes me happy each time I hear someone else received a computer who couldn't afford one.

The U.S. Thanksgiving holiday has just past, and December is almost hear. All the newspapers this past week talked about Black Friday shopping deals, and people running out buying TVs and computers. Now even more as Christmas approaches many are planning to upgrade their computers and TVs.

I am still receiving calls and messages from people in need of computers and tablets for their children . Just yesterday I heard from a gentleman whose wife is bedridden after a complicated delivery of their latest child. He is unable to work because he has to stay home and take care of her and their new baby, and his older daughter needs a computer for school but he has no income. I can understand his problem more than most having myself had to stay home to care for a bedridden family member some years ago.

I implore everyone, if you have recently or are about to purchase a new TV, Computer, or Tablet don't throw them out or sell them, instead donate them to a needy family. A HDMI TV can be a computer monitor. A SMART TV with a web browser can have a wireless keyboard and mouse added to become a computer. Old computers can be reconditioned.

There are many families out there in need, please don't take your blessings for granted. Share them with others. Lets all do our part.

Don't waste E-Waste! Everything Hinges on you.

Last week I had someone bring me a laptop to fix. Like many laptops as it got older the hinges started to "stick" and took more and more force to open and close. Eventually the case broke under the stress. They had already taken it to a couple of other places to see about having it repaired but all the quotes were too expensive, until they brought it to me.

Thankfully I had a very similar model (dead) laptop that I had scavenged for parts. While the model numbers were different, the exterior shell of the laptops were identical. With only a few hours work I was able to swap the shells, adjust the hinges, and put it back together, almost as good as new.

So I encourage everyone. Don't throw away your old laptop if its broken.
1) It may be repairable for a fraction of the cost to replace it.

2) If its not practical to repair or you just want to buy a new one, donate the old computer to someone who can put it to use fixing other people's computers. Computer parts are more expensive in T&T because we have to have them shipped in from North America, or China... Let's make the most of the parts we already have here.

On that same note, if your laptop hinges are starting to give resistance to open and close the display... before it breaks the laptop case, just have it serviced and the hinges adjusted. Its a lot cheaper than having the case and/or display break.

If you have a laptop or desktop computer in need of servicing, or repair please do not hesitate to contact me. My rates are very competitive. Contact me for an estimate.

Have a blessed week

PCs for Students in Need: Update 2020/11/18.

Its been a few days since I've had the time post anything but I want to applaud the recent announcements in the news. Over the Diwali weekend I read that Heritage has donated a couple hundred computers to schools, TATT in conjunction with Bmobile and Digicel will be distributing 10,000 devices (I suspect tablets) along with 3 months of internet access, and if that's not enough this week it was announced that BPTT is donating more tablets to the Mayaro Primary Schools.

The good news is its happening.. the ball is rolling. The bad news was that its taken almost the entire school term to reach this point. Now the government is hoping to reopen schools in January, and if we are lucky and we don't get a COVID spike, they will stay open. But using computers and tablets in teaching is not going to go away. In fact I suspect it will continue to grow. And we still have a long way to go to completely fill the gap in the Digital Divide.

So I encourage you all to please keep up the good work. Keep donating those old computers, working or not. And if you can afford it find a child in need, either a family in financial difficulty, or an orphan and purchase a computer computer or tablet for them as a Christmas present. There are a number of options for $1000 TT or less: Tablets, Raspberry Pi computers, etc. For some of you that is the amount you spend on a night of liming.. So stay home one or two nights and put that money to helping a child in need...

What better Christmas gift can you give a child than that of an education....

God Bless

PCs for Students in Need: 2020-11-12

Well its been a turbulent week watching the COVID-19 numbers climbing in the U.S. and EU, not to mention the anxiety in the disputed U.S. Presidential election.

But in today's Newsday newspaper I read some good news. I am thrilled to see the Ministry of Education is holding public consultations on the future of education in T&T. As long as I have been in T&T people have constantly said the educational system here needs an overhaul to keep up with the times. The best part is that the public is being invited to participate, and its not being done as unilateral decisions made by politicians without the public's input. The pandemic has force our students to use computers and technology in new ways. It is increasing their computer literacy, and opening new avenues of instruction, and everyone from the Ministry down is learning a lot as a result. Now its time to take what we have learned and start looking forward to the future...

With that I continue to urge everyone to help us close that digital divide and make computers and tablets available to all students. Please don't discard those old computers and tablets, instead save the environment and put them to good use for the benefit of those children who don't have a computer. Please donate...

And if you don't have anything to donate but want to contribute, contact me for some ideas on how you can help.

Thank you,
T&T PC Guy
