My Computer is running slowly. Do I need a new one ?

Many people think that a slow operating computer is a sign of needing a new one, when actually, it could just be a sign of needing some maintenance. If you think about it, if you don’t maintain your vehicle the performance is affected, if you don’t maintain your body the performance would be affected as well. Your computer is no different and needs to be periodically maintained to keep operating like new and to extend its lifespan. Here are four common factors that can affect your computer’s performance:

Limited RAM (Memory) - Often too many background programs that are set to automatically start when your computer starts up, can take a nice chuck of RAM/memory from your computer. You can disable all the unimportant background programs from automatically running at startup.

Limited Hard drive Space - If you are running out of hard drive space this too can affect your systems performance. Its a good practice to clean up your temporary files even if you have a good amount of storage space free on your drive.

Viruses and Other Malware - Viruses and other malicious software can be secretly utilizing your systems resources and slowing you down as well as causing some other problems you may not like. Simply having an Antivirus is not enough, be sure to keep it updated and run your scans ever so often as well.

Failing of defective hardware - Sometimes you can have a defective hard drive or RAM chip module and not even be aware, but though this is not the most frequent occurrence, it is a main factor that plays into the performance of your computer.

5 Questions You Must Always Ask Your Computer TECH / Repair Guy Before Doing Business!

There are a lot of persons out there offering PC repairs and I.T. services, some that are very professional and great and others that are the cause for the many I.T. tech guy horror stories you may hear. Sometimes It can be hard to separate the sheep from the wolves, but by asking these 5 questions before hand, you can save yourself some money and perhaps even a nightmare experience.

1. Do you charge a flat fee or an hourly fee ?

2. Is there a charge for troubleshooting or consultation ?

3. Would my data be backed up before any major changes are made to my computer ?

4. What Guarantee can you give that the integrity of my private / personal data is safe with you ?

5. Would I be charged if my problem re-occurs in “x” amount of time frame ?

These 5 questions, as simple as they may be, often strikes fear into the heart of the unscrupulous and unprofessional repair and tech guys. But I’m not just leaving you with the questions, below I would also give some of the good responses that you can expect from a professional and reliable repair/tech guy.

1. “Yes we charge a flat fee, and the average cost to solve/repair your problem would be “x amount$” or | Yes we charge by the hour and your problem or repair should take no longer than “x amount time” to resolve.” | Transparency of cost/average cost should always be given and agreed upon before the commencing of any work. This can usually save you from any un-expecting costs.

2. “No charge for troubleshooting or consultation” usually guarantees that the tech/repair guy is confident that they can in fact solve your issue and you won’t have to worry amount dipping into your pockets and your problem still isn’t solved.

3. Yes, personal files and user data are always backed up before any major changes or upgrades are made.” | Yes it is good practice for the user to keep back ups of their own data before hand, but it is best practice that techs and repair guys to back up the users personal data before any major change is made to the system.

4. “We have a non disclosure agreement that binds us to safeguarding the integrity of your data.” | This is the only true defense you may have to safeguard against an unethical tech or repair guy taking/ leaking your personal files and info. If you do have files and data you are worried may be taken/leaked without your permission, then ensuring that your tech/ repair guy has a non disclosure agreement is a MUST.

5. “No, if the problem reoccurs within x amount of days, we would check it again for free.” | One Week is usually the minimum time allotted for checking a reoccurring software problem and one month is the minimum time for checking reoccurring hardware related problems.
