The Bass is your Base!
Lets talk about bass, continuing the speaker setup discussion.

Getting the bass right is challenging, but it’s extremely rewarding when you do. Speakers typically have limits to how deep in the bass they can play, and how loudly they can play in the deep bass. Subwoofers can help, but it requires careful attention to set them up properly. Room modes also lie in the bass region, posing another challenge.
Some home theatre or music demos spotlight powerful, boomy bass, intended to awe and impress. But this isn’t “good” bass … unless that’s what the movie or music was intended to sound like. The boosted bass may conceal limited real deep bass extension, setup flaws or room mode issues. So what is good bass?
Bass should blend seamlessly with the rest of the sound, rather than imposing itself and promoting its presence. While good bass is certainly capable of depth and power, it must also have all the nuance, tonality and texture we recognise in the midrange and treble. Bass notes, especially percussive ones, are accompanied by higher frequency overtones and harmonics, so natural, realistic sound demands that all these components be correctly in balance, with none absent of overly prominent.
Good bass gives sound fullness, tonal richness, scale, and tactile realism. It also improves the perceived quality of the midrange and treble. Good full-range sound distinguishes itself from the thin, one-dimensional outline offered by bass-limited systems, on the one hand, and the ponderous, overbearing boom of excessive and one-note bass, on the other.
There’s much more to say about bass. Stay tuned, our discussion continues ...
