Dear Senator David Nakhid,
I write to you today with a heavy heart and deep sadness. I once admired you greatly as a minister, and I believed in the values you stood for. However, recent events have left me questioning my decision to support the UNC government.
The tragic killing of an innocent man by police officers, and the critical condition of his common law wife, has shaken me profoundly. What makes this tragedy even more unbearable is the silence from those in leadership—including yourself, whom I once considered my favorite minister.
At a time when the nation cries out for justice and accountability, silence feels like complicity.
From the Prime Minister’s broken promise about reducing traffic fines, to the Commissioner of Police defending the indefensible and sending the officers involved for counseling instead of holding them accountable, I feel betrayed. The video evidence was clear: the victim’s hands were outside, yet he was still shot to death. To hear the Prime Minister echo words like “empty the clip” only deepens the pain and fear that citizens now carry.
Minister Nakhid, I voted for this government with hope. Today, I feel regret. I expected courage, compassion, and a voice for justice. Instead, I see silence in the face of injustice. I urge you to remember the trust that citizens placed in you and to speak out against these wrongs. Trinidad and Tobago deserves leaders who will stand firmly for truth and humanity.
Respectfully,
