Can you spot the signs of a fake email before it's too late?
Phishing emails are getting more sophisticated, but scammers almost always leave clues. Take a look at the graphic below to see a real security alert side-by-side with a dangerous phishing attempt.
Look out for these three major red flags:
1ď¸âŁ The Sender's Address: Scammers will use names like "PayPal Admin," but the actual email address ( or a misspelled domain) gives them away.
2ď¸âŁ The Greeting: Legitimate companies usually address you by your actual name, not a generic "Dear customer."
3ď¸âŁ The Panic Button: Phishing emails rely on fear and urgency ("Click NOW or your account is closed!"). Real security alerts stay calm and objective.
What should you do if you receive a phishing email?
If an email looks suspicious, follow the "Don't" rules:
DON'T click any links or download any attachments. This is how malware is deployed.
DON'T reply to the senderâeven to tell them off. This just lets them know your email address is active.
DO report and delete it. If you're at work, forward it to your IT department or flag it using your email client's "Report Phishing" button, then delete it permanently.
DO go directly to the source. If you're genuinely worried about your account, open a new browser tab, type the companyâs official URL yourself, and log in securely to check for alerts.
Before you click any link, take a breath, look for the signs, and stay safe out there! đĄď¸
