Hapag-Lloyd commits to Fleet Xpress in five-year deal

20 March 2017

Inmarsat has signed a five-year contract with Hapag-Lloyd to migrate all ships directly managed by the shipping line to Fleet Xpress services.

Hapag-Lloyd, the sixth largest container shipping operator in the world by Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) capacity, will transition all the ships that it manages in-house from Inmarsat FleetBroadband services to Fleet Xpress. The agreement also covers five 10,500 TEU vessels as new builds.

Launched in 2016, Fleet Xpress sets a new standard in maritime communications. The service enhances vessel efficiency, crew welfare and safety, and facilitates ‘connected ship’ applications by delivering the highest levels of reliable high-speed broadband connectivity available from a single supplier on a global scale.

Fully-managed migration
Hapag-Lloyd has been an Inmarsat customer for more than a decade, and the transition commitment to Fleet Xpress coincides with the expiry of a service contract based on FleetBroadband with VSAT back-up via Ku-band.

The new agreement reflects the ship owner’s requirement for a fully-managed migration to high-speed broadband and support it can trust from a single service provider. The agreement also stipulates redundant service provision that would be scalable for any future fleet growth.

The deal includes Fleet Xpress terminals from both Inmarsat approved manufacturers, Intellian and Cobham SATCOM.

Future proof
“IT integration of our fleet has grown rapidly and will further develop. As a consequence Hapag-Lloyd has to ensure that ship-to-shore connectivity not only supports the increasing demand, but is also future proof,” said Jens Habler, Head of Hapag-Lloyd IT Operations Management.

Gerbrand Schalkwijk, Chief Sales Officer, Inmarsat Maritime, said: “Hapag-Lloyd is recognised as one of shipping’s most advanced owners when it comes to IT and ship-shore connectivity, and for the close attention it pays in addition to keeping its crews connected.

“We look forward to working with the owner’s team to realise the potential of the fully redundant Fleet Xpress service within the Hapag-Lloyd office, vessel and service organisation.”

Rolls-Royce and Stena Line to work together to develop intelligent awareness for ships

Monday, 20 March 2017

Rolls-Royce has signed a deal with Swedish ferry company Stena Line AB, to collaborate in the development of its first intelligent awareness system.

Intelligent awareness systems will make vessels safer, easier and more efficient to operate by providing crew with an enhanced understanding of their vessel’s surroundings. This will be achieved by fusing data from a range of sensors with information from existing ship systems; such as Automatic Identification System (AIS) and radar. Data from other sources, including global databases, will also have a role.

Asbjørn Skaro, Rolls-Royce, Director Digital & Systems – Marine, said: “We have been exploring and testing how to combine sensor technologies effectively and affordably for some time. Pilot projects such as this will allow us to see how they can be best adapted to the needs of a commercial vessel and its crew and allow us to develop a product which better serves both.

“Successful pilots and product development programmes are also an important step towards the further development of remote and autonomous vessels and meeting our goal of having a remote controlled ship in commercial use by the end of the decade.”

Harry Robertsson, Technical Director at Stena Teknik, expert technical advisors to the Swedish ferry company, said: “Stena Teknik continuously conducts research and development in the marine technology sector. This project gives us an opportunity to explore how new technologies can be integrated with the systems we already have on-board and to provide a more informed view of a vessel’s surroundings in an accessible and user friendly way. This will give our crew an enhanced decision support tool, increasing the safety of our vessels.”

Rolls-Royce expects to be able to undertake an Approval of Concept and have its intelligent awareness product commercially available later in 2017.

The system builds on experiences from R&D work worldwide. The intelligent awareness system will benefit from Rolls-Royce’s extensive experience in the Tekes funded project Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative (AAWA), which has been running since June 2015. The company has been conducting a series of tests of the sensor arrays in a range of operating and climatic conditions on board Finferries’ 65 metre double ended ferry Stella, which operates between Korpo and Houtskär in the Archipelago Sea on the southwest coast of Finland.

Windea Leibniz: Another on-time delivery from Ulstein Verft

02 March 2017

The ‘Windea Leibniz’ wind farm service vessel was delivered on-time from Ulstein Verft to Bernhard Schulte Offshore and ICBC Leasing on 28 February, and named today at a ceremony in Ulsteinvik. The vessel will shortly commence service at the Sandbank wind farm for Siemens.

The lady sponsor, Dai Ling, named the second wind farm service vessel of the Hamburg based shipping company Bernhard Schulte and the Beijing based financial company ICBC Leasing. The vessel carries the name of the German mathematician, philosopher and physicist Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, who in the 17th century proposed to use wind power to operate pumps.

The naming ceremony was held in Ulsteinvik, Norway, at the Ulstein Verft yard premises. The vessel has been designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions AS.

“Once again, Ulstein Verft proves the ability to deliver state-of-the-art vessels to the agreed time. We look forward to seeing the vessel at work, and hear the feedback of her results when operating in the renewable market,” says managing director Kristian Sætre at Ulstein Verft.

Work scope
Starting from April, the vessel will work at the Sandbank wind farm in the German Bight for Siemens Wind Power Service to ensure the production of green energy from 72 wind turbines.

The usage of the so-called Service Operation Vessels (SOV) will improve the efficiency of service operations at offshore wind farms. The vessel functions as a reliable and environmentally sound platform for wind farm operations and maintenance support, technician accommodation and transport, and the provision of exceptional levels of safe and reliable access to offshore installations.

X-STERN™
“The vessel has the X-STERN™ hull shape, which allows it to be positioned with the stern faced towards the weather instead of the bow only”, said Matthias Müller, Managing Director of Bernhard Schulte Offshore. He continued: “Her award-winning sister vessel ‘Windea La Cour’, which is working in the Dutch Gemini wind farm since August, has already proven that this leads to improved weather resilience, greater operability and reduced power and fuel consumption while on DP mode next to the wind turbine.”

Bernhard Schulte Offshore GmbH is the offshore unit of Bernhard Schulte, a worldwide leading family owned ship owner and ship manager which employs about 17,000 seafarers and about 1,400 people onshore, owns about 90 vessels and manages about 580 vessels.
