The Shifting Center of Data Gravity: What Is Data Gravity?
In addition to the question of how to extract value from data, organizations face the question where best to physically locate data. This question takes on particular significance due to "data gravity." Data gravity refers to the tendency for data to attract digital activity (such as applications, services, and business operations) to its physical location. For example, if a retail company stores its transaction histories, wholesale orders, and other information in their own data center, then the applications, services, and business operations related to that data, such as point-of-sale software and analytic services, tend to run within the same data center.
