Study: Gen Z Overwhelmingly Prefers Self-Checkout
Millennials, boomers and Gen X more likely to use a traditional checkout aisle or counter

A new study commissioned by Avery Dennison (Mentor, Ohio) that polled 4000 shoppers in the U.K. and U.S. found that 52 percent of Gen Z respondents would “switch to another store if their favorite decided to get rid of self-checkout,” Inc. reports.
The preference of using self-checkout versus a counter staffed by a human among Gen Z, according to the survey findings, is driven by speed, the desire for shorter lines/wait times and a reduced amount of human interaction. Conversely, boomers, millennials and Gen X’ers would rather not interact with self-checkout stations.
Some retailers have been shifting away from the reliance on self-checkout methods, like Dollar General (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) which recently announced it would increase the amount of workers in its checkout area, or Walmart (Bentonville, Ark.), which plans to reduce the amount of in-store self-checkouts to deter theft at certain locations.

How Many E-Gadgets Per Household?
Latest stat likely to put smiles on faces of consumer electronics retailers

The answer: 17%, per research released at the CES 2024 trade fair by Parks Associates. That’s up from 8% as recently as 2015.
The international market research and consulting firm’s latest Consumer Electronics Dashboard also noted that for the first time, smartphone ownership surpassed TV ownership, with 90 percent of households reporting ownership of a smartphone compared to 88 percent with a TV.
“Smartphones are ubiquitous now, and connected consumer electronics such as wireless earbuds, tablets, and smart TVs are commonplace,” said Sarah Lee, Research Analyst, Parks Associates. “Today, these devices are essential for entertainment purposes and daily personal communications, which can include school, work and family. This necessity drives continued purchases, as every year CE companies roll out innovative and advanced models that drive the consumer desire to upgrade.”
The research also showed consumer spending demonstrated what Parks described as “remarkable resilience” in 2023. After a brief pause early in the year, shoppers’ enthusiasm for consumer electronics products rebounded at the end of the year. Purchase intentions for popular entertainment devices such as gaming consoles, streaming media players and VR headsets increased compared to 2022 and now resemble 2021 levels, which was the height of the pandemic.
“Economic conditions and fear of a recession previously stalled purchases of CE categories,” Lee said. “But higher intentions to purchase are likely a reflection of prolonged delayed gratification, the end-of-year holiday season, enticing retail promotions and hope for continued economic improvement in 2024.”

Dubai Duty Free achieves all-time record sales in 2023

December finished with record monthly sales of $221 million, an 8.37 percent increase compared to 2022

The New Year began on a high note for Dubai Duty Free with the operation announcing an all-time sales record of AED 7.885 billion (US$2.16 billion) for 2023, representing a 24.39 percent increase over the previous year and 6.40 percent up on pre-pandemic in 2019.

December finished with record monthly sales of AED 807.6 million (US$221 million), an 8.37 percent increase compared to 2022. December sales were further fuelled by Dubai Duty Free’s 40th anniversary celebrations when the operation offered a 25 percent discount on 20th December, which resulted in a shopping spree of AED 54.1 million (US$14.8 million) for 24 hours.

Meanwhile, in line with the growth of the operation, the rehiring and recruitment of staff continued with the total employee count now standing at 5,500. Throughout the year, the operation received a total of 18 awards, including its 22nd consecutive Business Traveller Middle East Award for "Best Airport for Duty Free Shopping in the Middle East", the Gulf Business “Retail Company of the Year” award and the seventeenth consecutive Global Traveler Award for “Best Duty-Free Shopping in the World”. Colm McLoughlin was also the recipient of personal awards including the unique and one-time Pearl Achievement Award for "Outstanding Contribution to the Travel Industry", which was created to mark the 30th edition of the Arabian Travel Market. He was also presented with the inaugural “Frontier Pioneer” Award at the Frontier Awards in Cannes in October.

Looking ahead, Dubai Duty Free will continue to enhance its retail operation which includes major refurbishment plans in Concourse B, which will be completed early this year. The operation is also working on the scheduled renovations of three Arrival shops in the first quarter of 2024, with construction to continue until the second to third quarter of 2024. Concourse A (2 Perfumes and Cosmetics Shops and Fashion area) will also be refurbished starting in the second quarter of 2024 and will be finished in early to mid-2025 with three new boutiques of major Fashion brands.
In addition, Dubai Duty Free will continue to maintain its busy events and promotional calendar which includes the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships to be staged at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium from the 18th February – 2nd March 2024.
