CUP (Critical Urban Practice) atölyeleri*, başta mimarlık ve şehir planlama bölümlerinde okuyan öğrenciler olmak üzere, ‘kentsel çalışmalar’ alanına ilgi duyan, halihazırda bu alanda üretimler yapan tüm lisans öğrencilerinin katılımına açıktır. Tanınmış tasarımcı, sanatçı, aktivist ve akademisyenlerce yürütülecek atölyeler, tasarım ve planlama eğitimleri devam eden öğrencilere, eleştirel, sanatsal
ve kolektif bir üretim deneyimi vadediyor. Etkinlik, “Critical Urban Practice” (Eleştirel Kentsel Pratik) adını, tam da vadettiği bu deneyim üzerinden alıyor. CUP atölyeleri, kenti bir çalışma alanı olarak benimseyen, onu ‘teoriler türetmek’ yerine ‘sanatsal / pratik uğraşlar’ üzerinden ele alan; ancak bunu yaparken yöntem ve temsil olanaklarını çeşitlendirerek, 'gerçekliğin görünmeyen boyutlarını' deşifre etmeye yönlendirebilen, yenilikçi - eleştirel bir pozisyon öneriyor. CUP atölyeleri, 'kentin / kentsel deneyimin temsilini' bir problematik olarak öncülleştiriyor. Temsilin gerçekliğin tasvirinde esaslı bir işlevi olduğunu, başka bir ifadeyle, her bir temsil biçiminin aynı zamanda gerçekliğe sanatsal bir 'müdahale' anlamı taşıdığını ileri sürüyor. Kentin temsilinde modern mimarlık ve şehircilik konvansiyonlarının 'kalıplaşmış' / 'geniş spektrumlu' analiz pratikleri yerine, her kentsel durumun biricikliğini esas alan, 'kalıplaştırılamaz' bir temsil anlayışını öneriyor. Bu kapsamda, fotoğraf, video, animasyon, yerleştirme, müdahale, modelleme, üç boyutlu ifade, sosyal araştırma / saha, haritalama, coğrafi bilgi sistemleri gibi farklı yöntem, kaynak ve temsil ortamlarından beslenen atölyeler, katılımcılarına kenti kolektif üretimler aracılığıyla, eleştirel bir gözle yeniden okuma olanağı sunuyor. CUP (Critical Urban Practice) workshops* is open to all undergraduate students, particularly for students in architecture and urban planning majors, who are interested in 'urban studies', and already producing in these fields. The workshops to be conducted by acclaimed designers, artists, activists and scholars promise critical, artistic and collective production experience for students. The "Critical Urban Practice" event is specifically named after this promise of experience. CUP workshops offer a novel critical position that regard the city as a field of study and examines it through artistic / practical pursuits instead of 'constructing theories' yet driving the quest to expose the ‘unseen dimensions of reality’ by diversifying the methods and the possibilities of representation at the same time. CUP workshops prioritize “the representation of the city/urban experience" as a problematique, suggesting that representation holds an essential function in the depiction of reality, or in other words, each of the forms of representation is in fact an artistic 'intervention' on the reality as well. An 'unformulizable' representation approach based on the uniqueness of each urban situation is proposed in the representation of the city, rather than the 'formulaic' / 'broad-spectrum' analysis practices of modern architecture and urbanism conventions. Building on different methods, sources and representative environments such as photography, video, animation, installation, intervention, three-dimensional modeling, social research, mapping, geographic information systems (GIS), the workshops offer a critical opportunity to the participants to re-read the city through collective production.
