🎵💡 Our projects don’t always stop at the front door…

Recently, we’ve been working on installations in spas and wellness centres, designing multi-room audio and lighting control systems.

Some of these projects have come from customers we originally worked with on their home cinema and smart home systems.

They liked working with us at home, so when they needed technology for their businesses, they asked H3 Digital to take care of that too.

That’s a great compliment and exactly the type of long-term relationship we like to have with our customers.

We’ve just taken delivery of a bit of a beast for the H3 Digital cinema showroom! 🔊💪

The OSD XMax11 has arrived, and at 34kg, getting it through the door was almost a two-man workout.

It’ll soon be installed in our cinema showroom, where it will bring some serious power, but it’s not just about playing loud. We’re looking for deep, controlled sound with the refinement and detail that makes a great cinema system feel effortless.

I’m looking forward to getting this one installed, calibrated and putting it through its paces. 🎬🍿

A little acoustic upgrade in my office/cinema demo room today. 🔊

I’ve been fitting some acoustic diffusers to the back wall behind my desk.

Diffusers work differently from acoustic absorption. Rather than simply absorbing sound energy, they scatter reflections in different directions. This helps make the room sound more natural and spacious, without making it feel too acoustically dead.

It’s something we use when designing cinema rooms too. Getting the acoustics right isn’t just about covering walls with absorption. A good room normally needs a considered combination of absorption, diffusion and reflection.

And, of course, they make my office wall look a bit more interesting too!

🔌 Designing the cinema rack before we even get to site…

I’m working on a rack system where the aim is to build, wire, configure and test as much as possible before it arrives at the property.

Rather than building everything on site, the complete rack can arrive fully assembled and ready to connect.

The connections to the cinema will be:

🔊 11 x Neutrik Speakon connections for the speakers
🔉 2 x XLR connections for the subwoofers
🎬 HDMI connections via a splitter/interface panel
🌐 Network connections
⚡ Power

Everything inside the rack can be properly wired, labelled, configured and tested beforehand.

Once it arrives on site, we position the rack, plug in the connections from the room and move on to programming, calibration and final testing.

It takes more thought and planning at the design stage, but it makes the final installation much cleaner, quicker and easier to service in the future.

And, to be fair, designing and building AV racks is one of the bits I really enjoy. 😂

🔊 A little bit of experimenting with the 3D printer…

I’ve started prototyping some small acoustic sound diffusers to see what we can create.

At the moment it’s just for fun. Different shapes, different depths, different patterns, followed by some testing to find out what actually works - Will be using the PRD Calculator here https://actools.tunetown.de/prd/ for the actual 2D primitive root diffusers commonly known as Skyline acoustic diffuser - an example of a two-dimensional diffuser. It incorporates both vertical and horizontal diffusion.

3D printing gives us the freedom to experiment with shapes that would be difficult or time-consuming to manufacture traditionally. Design it, print it, test it, change it and print another one. 😎

Whether these ever make it into one of our cinema projects remains to be seen, but I’m enjoying finding out! 🎬🔊

♻️ Who needs expensive site furniture when you have empty speaker cable reels? 😂

One of the less glamorous parts of installing a home cinema is spending hours working close to the floor. Kneeling, crouching and sitting on the floor soon takes its toll!

So, we decided to turn some empty speaker cable reels into our own little home cinema installation seats.

A bit of padding, some of our home cinema fabric and voilà! Comfy little seats that are perfect for working down at floor level. 😎

A simple bit of recycling that actually works really well. And much kinder on the knees!

Back on the Sonos training! 🔊

Yesterday we spent some time training with on the new Sonos Amp Multi.

✅ Sonos is a product we know particularly well. We were the Sonos distributor for many years and was personally involved with installations in probably 1,000+ rooms, so it was great to get back into the technical side and see what the latest generation of products can do.

✅ Things have moved on a lot, and the new Amp Multi brings some interesting possibilities for distributed audio and whole-home systems - It's a Pro install only product and is very exciting.

There's always something new to learn in this industry, and there's no better way to stay sharp than getting hands-on with the latest technology.

Sonos + experience + the next generation. A good combination! 🎵

Not all renders are created equal… 🎬

When we design a home cinema, we often start with a quick render in SketchUp. It’s fast, flexible, and perfect for:

✔️ Testing layouts
✔️ Playing with room dimensions
✔️ Exploring seating positions and screen sizes
But a quick render only tells part of the story.

Once we move into a fully lit, more realistic render, everything changes:

✨ Lighting brings the room to life
✨ Materials start to feel real — fabrics, panels, finishes
✨ You can actually feel the atmosphere of the space
✨ It helps clients visualise exactly what their cinema will look like at movie time

That’s when the design stops being technical… and starts becoming emotional.
