Back in 2012, I made a decision that changed the rest of my life.

The companies I was competing with were going hard on scale. Wayfair. Hayneedle. The big eCommerce networks. Aggressive hiring, hundreds of stores, chasing billion-dollar valuations.

Wayfair’s publicly traded now. Doing billions a year in revenue.

That path was available to me too. Same model. Same timing. Same playbook.

I chose not to take it.

The reason comes up in almost every podcast interview I do: “If high-ticket dropshipping works so well, why don’t you just scale it yourself?”
I do. I just don’t scale to thousands of employees. The lifestyle this business gave me would’ve been the first thing to go. Time with my kids. Golf year-round. Freedom to travel. None of that survives running a thousand-person company.

That wasn’t the point of any of it.

So I made a different bet. Run the stores I have. Help other people build theirs. Keep the life.

Scale isn’t the goal. Freedom is. The model is just the vehicle.

Why Your Competitors Are Outselling You (And How to Fix It)

This is an exercise I run with founders inside the AK Founder Circle on almost every one of our calls. We open their product page next to their top three competitors. Same product. Real side-by-side comparison.

And every single time, we find the same thing: the competitors are showing something the founder isn’t.

Not a lower price. Not a better deal. Stuff like:

A 10-year warranty the supplier already provides. A “ships in two to three days” note. A financing option built into the offer. Free white-glove delivery on orders over a certain amount.

All of it free to add. All of it offered by the same supplier you’re already working with. The competitor is just showing it off. You’re not.

People decide on the page. If your competitor’s page tells a more complete story, they win the click — even when the product is identical.

Open your store next to your top three competitors tonight. The gap is your homework.

Most people look at their Google Ads account, see “we spent $4,000 and made $11,000 back,” and assume the problem is their products. It’s almost never the products.

If I took over your account today, here’s the first thing I’d fix:

Log in. Click Insights and Reporting. Click Search Terms.

That report shows every single keyword you actually paid for. And I’ll bet you a steak dinner that 30 to 40% of your budget is going toward searches that will never lead to a sale. “Free.” “Cheap.” Costco. Amazon. Random brand names you don’t even carry. People comparing prices on products you sell at full retail.

Check them off. Add them as negative keywords. Done.

Now every dollar you spend goes toward people who can actually buy. That one exercise can double your return on ad spend before you change anything else on your store.

Most store owners never click into that report. The money is hiding right there.

My first online business was a bakery delivery route on Long Island.

Hated almost every part of it.

So I put the bakery online — built a website, ran Google Ads, started selling cookies on the internet. It worked. But the margins were thin enough that I kept asking myself if I was wasting my time.

Then one question changed everything:

If selling $10 cookies online works… what happens if I sell $1,000 products instead?

Same website. Same traffic. Same effort. The only thing that changes is the math.

That question is the reason I never went back. And every business I’ve built since has been a version of the same answer.

High-ticket and low-ticket take the same work. One of them pays you ten times more.

About 30% of our monthly revenue comes from email promotions sent to lists we'd already built.

Simple emails, sent through Shopify Messaging, to people who had already bought from us, abandoned a cart, or signed up through an exit-intent overlay.

Before we consistently ran monthly promotions, that list was a dead asset.

Then we built a simple system: three to five days every single month, one promotion, sent to everyone on the list, and it became the single most profitable channel in the business.

If you’re running an ecom store you already have customers, you already have abandoned checkouts, you already have email signups. Most stores just don't have a system for turning that into additional revenue.

A friend of mine spent $40,000 on SEO and got nothing out of it.

Not because the agency was bad. They were one of the best in Manhattan.

She paid them to rank her store for a single keyword. The big one. The category-defining word that defined her whole niche.
