Layer 2 vs. Layer 3 networks

Bridged vs. Routed

Data link layer vs. Network layer

All three refer to the same two pieces of the OSI model that enable different functions.

Recognizing the distinction between the two is important for building functional .

Say you're building a system with a Class C distributed network, and you'd like to use a single software gateway - Layer 2 is the move. This puts your SCADA head local to each periphery node as if it were hardwired. (By the way, you have two choices for building a Layer 2 capable network - traditional IT tools and Tosibox. Only one of these takes 10 seconds and no IT knowledge to deploy).

Now say you're building a globally distributed system requiring a Class B or Class A network. Layer 3 is what you need. This enables VLAN and 1:1 NAT functionality to broaden your network and centrally aggregate all your data into one space.
