Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is shaping up to be a key proving ground for artificial intelligence and machine learning. The technology could be vital in the information war – whereby Russia may seek to employ AI techniques such as deepfakes to supercharge their disinformation campaigns and machine learning can help detect them.
The tech could also prove pivotal for future war crime prosecutions to fact-check and document potential atrocities and human rights violations. AI and ML can help analyse the vast amount of open-source intelligence coming out of Ukraine—everything from TikTok videos and Telegram posts of troop formations and attacks uploaded by average Ukrainians to publicly available satellite imagery.
Russia's invasion of its neighbor will be a proving ground for the technology, for better or worse
