China International Fair for Investment and Trade
The 26th China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT), which opened in Xiamen, Fujian Province, from September 8–11, 2026, may appear to be simply another international investment and trade event in China. But looking more closely, CIFIT reflects something much more significant: China’s continued effort to maintain and expand its economic connections with the rest of the world at a time when economies everywhere are seeking to reduce risks and restructure their supply chains.
This year’s CIFIT has attracted participants from 129 countries and regions, including 30 international organizations. More than 1,200 government agencies and business delegations, along with over 2,600 executives and business leaders, are taking part. The exhibition area has also expanded from 120,000 square meters to 200,000 square meters, with 14 specialized zones covering investment in China, China’s outbound investment, and international investment. These figures mean more than simply showing that the event has grown in size. They demonstrate that despite efforts to diversify economic risks, China continues to attract global attention as a major market, manufacturing base, technology center, and investment destination.
What CIFIT is showing us, therefore, may not simply be that “China wants foreign investment.” It is a reflection of a global economy entering a new phase. Countries and multinational companies may no longer want to become excessively dependent on any single country, but at the same time, they cannot easily ignore China’s market and economic potential. De-risking does not necessarily mean decoupling, and competition does not necessarily mean the end of cooperation.
From The Economy of China’s perspective, this is perhaps the most important message emerging from this year’s CIFIT. The future global economy may not be defined by the simple question of “who chooses China and who chooses the West.” Instead, the more complex question is how countries and businesses can balance competition, economic security, and international cooperation.
CIFIT is therefore more than an investment fair in Xiamen. It is a reflection of a global economy undergoing a transition—from an era of largely unrestricted interdependence toward one in which interdependence is increasingly managed and conditioned. Yet even in this new environment, the world cannot completely separate itself, and China remains one of the key centers of the global economic system that every major economy must take into consideration.
Ultimately, what deserves attention is not simply how many countries will participate in the next CIFIT, but how China and the rest of the world will build a new model of economic relations that allows them to coexist and prosper. In a world of intensifying competition, closing the door may provide security in some areas. But opening the door strategically may create far greater opportunities for economic growth.
