It was late on Friday night at the end of the month. The time was 10 PM.
Only a few lights remained on in the office. The room was almost silent, except for the sound of the air conditioner and the occasional tapping of a keyboard.
Suchart was working with overwhelming exhaustion. He had been working for no fewer than 12 hours a day, keeping up this pace since Monday. He was sitting at his desk, trying to finish the final set of annual accounting records. His mind was foggy, dark circles surrounded his eyes, and he took deep breaths from exhaustion. His focus was constantly on the verge of fading unless he had a cup of black coffee beside him to keep going.
He took the last sip of his coffee and finished checking his work. During the final check, he discovered that he had made a mistake in one transaction, causing nearly half of the figures to shift.
He rubbed his face in despair, sighed, and walked over to make his fifteenth cup of coffee.
When he returned to his desk with the hot coffee in his hand, he took a sip. The bitterness and heat gave him just enough clarity to regain some of his focus.
Suddenly, something unusual appeared on his screen.
There was an email waiting for him.
It was from his boss.
The email read:
“Suchart, stop working on the accounting for now. I’ll take over from here. Just send it to me.”
With exhaustion at its absolute limit, combined with the stress and despair that had followed him for more than 60 hours, it felt as if he had finally seen a light. A brilliant light breaking through a tiny opening in the dark clouds and dust hanging above him.
Enough. I’m done. I’m exhausted. Just take it away from me.
The thoughts echoed in his head as his mouse dragged the entire year’s accounting records into the email from his “boss.”
Click.
The soft click of the mouse as he pressed Send sounded like a bell of liberation, as if the clouds of dust had finally begun to clear.
Finally, some rest.
Suchart hurried home as fast as he could. A warm shower, a light meal before bed, and a soft mattress were all he needed.
His eyes slowly closed in exhaustion...
.
But the disaster that Suchart could never have imagined...
had already begun.
Two weeks later, the office was thrown into chaos.
Accountants began following up with multiple Vendors because payments that should have been received by the company were nowhere to be found.
“According to our records, the payment has already been made. Why hasn’t it reached your account?”
But the answer they received was even more disturbing.
“Last week, your company sent us an email saying that the bank account had been changed... wasn’t that you?”
One sentence was enough to send shockwaves throughout the entire company.
Some Vendors insisted that they had already paid.
Some provided proof of payment.
The amount was correct.
The company name was correct.
The Invoice number was correct.
Everything appeared to be correct...
Except for one thing.
The money had not gone to the company’s account.
The atmosphere in the meeting room grew increasingly tense. The Accounting team began reviewing past transactions. The Finance team urgently contacted the bank, while management began calling emergency meetings one after another.
A small question had turned into nonstop phone calls.
Confusion had turned into pressure.
And at that moment, everyone began to realize...
this was a Data Breach.
“Data Breach is an incident in which information is accessed, copied, disclosed, or removed without authorization. This can result from a cyberattack, human error, or accidental exposure. Leaked information may be used for impersonation, deception, or fraud against the company, its customers, and business partners, causing damage to reputation, trust, and business confidentiality.”
......And once the data is out, the organization can no longer control where it will be used or who it will reach next.....
Seeing the scale of the disaster unfolding around him, Suchart immediately opened his Sent Mail and searched for that email.
He began examining the details of the “boss’s” email that had been sent to him that night.
Then he saw it.
The character he had always assumed was a lowercase “l” in his boss’s email address was actually...
the number “1.”
Business Email Compromise (BEC) often occurs without obvious warning signs, and attack emails can be so convincing that they are difficult to distinguish from normal business communications. This is why organizations need to continuously build Cybersecurity Awareness among employees to reduce the risks and potential damage that may occur in the future.
But in reality, humans make mistakes.
When a Data Breach occurs as a result of Business Email Compromise (BEC), Digital Forensics can help investigate the incident to determine its cause and scope, including:
• Identifying which Account or Email was compromised and when it was accessed
• Determining whether the incident resulted from leaked Credentials, password reuse, or other attack methods
• Investigating whether Malware or other mechanisms may have allowed the attacker to access internal systems and data
• Determining when emails or internal data were accessed, copied, or transmitted outside the organization
• Analyzing Emails, Logs, and related system data to establish a Timeline and determine what information the attacker may have accessed
• Assessing the scope of the Data Breach to help the organization develop remediation measures and prevent similar incidents from happening again
The disaster that Suchart found himself in could have been avoided.
Through continuous Cyber Awareness training for employees, stronger security measures for accounts and email, proper access controls, and a prepared Incident Response and Digital Forensics Plan, organizations can reduce the risk and impact of similar incidents.
