This diagram explains the working of an optocoupler, which is an electronic component used to transfer signals between two isolated circuits using light. The device has an internal LED on the input side and a phototransistor on the output side. When the digital logic input is at 0V, the LED inside the optocoupler remains off, so the transistor is in the cut-off state, and the output remains at 12V through the pull-up resistor. When the digital logic input switches to 5V, current flows through the LED, causing it to emit light. This light activates the phototransistor, which turns on and pulls the output to 0V. In this way, the optocoupler provides electrical isolation while enabling safe signal transmission between low-voltage logic and high-voltage circuits.
