Not many people know, that my first ever car that I drove after driving school, was a Volvo. Specifically, Volvo S40 1997 with 1,8l petrol engine. Man, that was one nice car to drive as a first driver. But it was expensive to own. Insurance was obscene. It was also a very thirsty car. It drank 10-12 liters per 100 km. So I sold it.
Over the years I’ve driven a few cars, some borrowed. But I always remembered how nice the Volvo was. The last car I had owned and drove, was Clio IV 2016 that I bought just after Covid for a good price. It often felt like a car that is just okay. A car that is there to get you from point A to point B. I mean, that’s the purpose of a car, right?
Since I’ve gotten married though, the Clio slowly stopped being the optimal car for me and for my wife. If we were just in Slovenia, it would have been fine. But, considering we travel to Czech Republic and back decently often with a car, I don’t think long term it was going to be the right car.
We, and by we meaning mostly I, looked at Škoda Octavia Combi, Toyota Prius or Toyota Auris. Octavia was fine but overpriced for what it is. It seems all Škodas are these days. Toyota Prius scared me because it’s automatic and it looks too expansive, too open inside – it didn’t feel as safe. But that was just my view as I went to see it when Kaja was abroad.
When she got back, I modified my search and did some more homework on a wider search. I had remembered my first car. That safe, comfortable, full of features ride in a Volvo. So I looked. Initially I was looking at V60 because it has a larger boot. A friend of mine who’s also a Volvo guy told me a little bit about them, how reliable they actually, in specific engine configurations.
Then I saw the perfect Volvo V40 on my search and noticed it was in the nearby village. I jumped through the moon, and Kaja and I both went to try it out. I didn’t think it would have been this nice inside. Leather heated seats, cruise control, the right engine, the right price, nice size, even many nice to haves that we didn’t even know could be in 2012 car. We paid the reservation fee, and for a whole week dreamed about it until finally collecting it on Monday.
There it is. Our Volvo V40 D3, 2012 Diesel with 254K km. With beautiful white paintjob, Summum trim, with glass roof almost all the upgrades (I’m really tempted to fully upgrade the normal cruise control to active one if possible). It’s a joy to drive. You feel like it hugs you when you sit inside it.
The Clio era is over. The vinyl wrapped Clio, that advertised my services, is behind me. I hope that the Clio will serve a new owner, whoever it may be, well. And I hope that this Volvo will serve our family well for years to come. ❤️
