๐ฌ๐ง Just drop it on ArahPaint!
Did you know that if you have a bunch of old jacquard card filesโor somebody sends you a file you canโt openโyou can simply drag and drop it onto ArahPaint? If the program recognizes the format, it opens instantly. Super easy for the user, but definitely not easy to implement.
ArahPaint supports around 70 formats, from standard graphics like JPEG, PNG, BMP, and WebP to specialized jacquard card formats such as Stรคubli JC3, JC4, and JC5. These files usually appear without icons in desktop file managers because the formats are not open standards.
Let me give you an example with Stรคubli JC4, because we recently found some old files that didnโt load correctlyโand weโve now fixed them. JC4 is a special format intended for 3.5" floppy transfer. The floppy uses custom formatting, so if you insert it into a PC, you canโt read it: itโs not DOSโformatted. You need special software like ArahWeave to read the floppy, or you must read the file directly from the JC4 controller.
How did design studios exchange files back then? First by sending floppies. Later, they used utilities to read the floppy disk image and save it as a file, and on the receiving side, another utility wrote the image back to a floppy. ArahPaint can open these files directly.
But the complications donโt stop there. Designs could be larger than 1.44 MBโthe maximum floppy sizeโso files were split across multiple floppies, or across multiple email attachments. And JC4 also supported network transfer: in that case, files were sent via FTP or directly from ArahWeave, using extensions based on the number of hooks (.1344, .1536, .2688, .6144).
With the newer JC5 controllers, Stรคubli abandoned custom floppy formatting in favor of standard DOS, which is a huge simplification. JC5 files can now be written or emailed directly. But even here, things arenโt entirely simple: JC5 files can be compressed, becoming .ZC5. And if theyโre too large for a single floppy, theyโre split into .J01, .J02, .J03โฆ or, when compressed, .Z01, .Z02, .Z03โฆ
We have similar stories for Grosse, Bonas, and other manufacturers.
Having one free program like ArahPaint that opens all of these formats is a tremendous resource for weavers.

Se il programma riconosce il formato, il file si apre immediatamente. Facilissimo per lโutente, ma decisamente non semplice da implementare.
ArahPaint supporta circa 70 formati, dai classici formati grafici come JPEG, PNG, BMP, โฆ ai formati specializzati per cartoni jacquard, come Stรคubli JC3, JC4 e JC5. Questi file spesso non mostrano alcuna icona nel desktop o nel file manager, perchรฉ non sono formati standard aperti.
Ti faccio un esempio con Stรคubli JC4, perchรฉ di recente abbiamo trovato alcuni vecchi file che non si caricavano correttamente โ e ora li abbiamo sistemati. JC4 รจ un formato particolare, pensato per il trasferimento tramite floppy da 3,5". Il floppy usa una formattazione speciale, quindi se lo inserisci in un PC non puoi leggerlo: non รจ un floppy in formato DOS. Devi usare programmi specifici come ArahWeave per leggere il floppy, oppure leggere il file direttamente dal controllore JC4.
Come si scambiavano i file negli studi di design? Allโinizio spedendo i floppy. In seguito, si usavano utility per leggere lโimmagine del disco e salvarla in un file, e sul lato ricevente unโaltra utility riscriveva lโimmagine su un floppy. ArahPaint รจ in grado di aprire direttamente questi file.
Ma le complicazioni non finiscono qui. I disegni potevano essere piรน grandi di 1,44 MB โ la capacitร massima di un floppy โ e quindi i file venivano suddivisi su piรน floppy, oppure inviati via email in piรน parti. Inoltre JC4 supportava anche il trasferimento via rete: in quel caso i file venivano inviati tramite FTP o direttamente da ArahWeave, con estensioni basate sul numero di licci (.1344, .1536, .2688, .6144).
Con i controllori JC5 piรน recenti, Stรคubli ha abbandonato la formattazione personalizzata dei floppy in favore del formato DOS standard, una grande semplificazione. I file .JC5 possono ora essere scritti o inviati direttamente. Tuttavia, anche qui non รจ tutto semplice: i file JC5 possono essere compressi, diventando .ZC5. E se sono troppo grandi per un singolo floppy, vengono suddivisi in .J01, .J02, .J03โฆ oppure, se compressi, in .Z01, .Z02, .Z03โฆ
