Smart Factory
Tag (Tag-Based Licensing)

Tag-Based Licensing vs. Unlimited SCADA Architecture: What It Means for Factory Scalability
A subtle bottleneck in scaling factory automation is the traditional Tag-Based Licensing Model.
In legacy SCADA architectures, every additional sensor, PLC connection, or monitored parameter increases software licensing costs. This model often forces engineering compromises:
- Data Omission: Engineering teams are compelled to exclude "non-critical" parameters to contain software costs, leaving operational blind spots in plant analytics.
- Restricted Access: Per-user or per-client fees limit dashboard access, preventing floor operators and supervisors from having transparent operational visibility.
Modern SCADA Architecture: Modern industrial software standards are shifting toward Unlimited Tag & Client Architectures (such as Ignition SCADA). Decoupling data point volume from software licensing allows plants to capture complete machine telemetry, establishing a scalable foundation for future Industrial IoT and AI Predictive analytics.
