πŸš€ Meet MikroTik CMR Centralized Management for RouterOS Fleets

Managing multiple MikroTik devices? CMR brings centralized monitoring and fleet management directly into the RouterOS ecosystem.

One MikroTik device acts as the CMR server, giving you a central view and management point for your RouterOS devices, whether they are on the same network or connected across routed networks, NAT or VPN.

πŸ”Ή What can CMR do?

πŸ“Š Device inventory & live monitoring
⬆️ Centralized RouterOS fleet upgrades
🚨 Health, resource, interface & log-based alerts
πŸ’» Run commands across multiple devices
πŸ—ΊοΈ Network topology visualization
πŸ“ˆ Application traffic visibility
πŸ“Ά Centralized Wi-Fi provisioning
πŸ”€ VLAN provisioning
🏷️ Group and manage devices using labels

For MSPs, system integrators, enterprises and anyone managing a growing MikroTik deployment, CMR introduces an interesting new way to operate an entire RouterOS fleet from one place.

And importantly, CMR complements RouterOS rather than replacing it. Advanced configuration such as routing, firewall, DHCP and other device settings remain under your control through RouterOS.

πŸ‘€ Definitely one to watch for anyone managing MikroTik at scale.

πŸ“Ά Want multiple Wi-Fi networks without buying additional routers or access points?

With MikroTik, you can create a separate guest Wi-Fi network using your existing device at no additional cost and with just a few configuration steps.

Watch this MikroTik video to learn how to set up a guest Wi-Fi network with basic firewall rules, allowing guests to access the internet while keeping your private network protected.

DNS Is Working. So Why Can't Users Reach the Site?

A user says a website will not load.

You check the domain. It resolves to the right IP.

DNS works. Case closed?

Not quite. πŸ‘€

A successful lookup only tells you that a DNS query got an answer. It does not tell you whether the affected client got the same answer, and it definitely does not tell you whether traffic can reach the site.

So before changing anything, check the problem from the user's side.

Maybe your MikroTik resolves the name correctly, but the client is using a different DNS server handed out by DHCP. In that case, the router and the client may not be seeing the same DNS result at all.

And sometimes the clue is sitting right inside the reply.

NXDOMAIN means the resolver says the name does not exist.

SERVFAIL means the DNS query could not be completed successfully. If RouterOS is using DNS over HTTPS, for example, an unreachable configured DoH server can result in SERVFAIL.

Then there is the slightly sneakier one:

The name resolves... to 0.0.0.0. 🚫

That does not look like a failed DNS query, but it may still be a blocked one. RouterOS Adlist can return 0.0.0.0 for blocked A queries and :: for blocked AAAA queries.

But what if the client gets the correct IP and the site still refuses to load?

That is the point where DNS needs to stop taking the blame.

The problem may be further down the path.

MTU and Path MTU Discovery are worth investigating when a connection starts but larger transfers stall, particularly when VPNs or tunnels are involved. If the path cannot carry the expected packet size and PMTUD is not working correctly, some traffic can appear perfectly normal while other traffic gets stuck.

For affected TCP traffic, adjusting TCP MSS with RouterOS mangle can help in the right situation, but only after you have confirmed that MTU or PMTUD is actually the problem.

So when someone says:

β€œThe website doesn't work, but DNS is fine.”

Don't stop at β€œDNS is fine.”

Ask a few more questions:

βœ“ Is the client using the DNS server you think it is?
βœ“ Did DNS return the right address?
βœ“ Is filtering changing the answer?
βœ“ If the answer is correct, can traffic actually reach the destination?
βœ“ Do smaller packets work while larger transfers stall?

DNS can tell you where a name points.

It cannot promise that the road there is clear. πŸ˜‰

Have you ever had DNS working perfectly while the real problem was somewhere else? What did you find? πŸ‘‡

Choosing a Router Starts With Understanding the Site

Every branch office can look similar on paper: a few desks, a printer, some phones, and an internet connection. But the hardware that fits one site may not fit another. The difference comes down to what the network actually needs to support.

How many people actually use the network?

Headcount alone does not determine which router a site needs, but it helps build a picture of the expected load. A small office with a handful of users and a larger branch with dozens of active devices can have very different capacity and traffic requirements.

What needs a wired connection?

Desktops, printers, NAS devices, door controllers, cameras, and other fixed equipment may benefit from wired connectivity. The number and speed of Ethernet ports the site actually needs should be part of the hardware decision from the start.

How important is a backup connection?

If the site depends on internet access for payments, cloud applications, voice services, or day-to-day operations, consider what happens when the primary connection goes down. Depending on the model and deployment, a second Ethernet WAN or supported cellular connectivity can provide another path.

Does anything need PoE power?

Some MikroTik models provide PoE-out. When the router and the connected device have compatible PoE requirements, this can reduce the need for a separate PoE injector or power adapter and simplify the installation.

Who will support the site remotely?

If nobody technical is normally on site, think about how the router will be configured, monitored, and troubleshot remotely. For teams already working with MikroTik, using RouterOS across sites can provide a familiar and consistent environment for remote administration.

By this point, the shortlist usually looks very different. A small branch using fixed broadband, a site that needs cellular backup, and a location with more wired devices or PoE requirements may all call for different hardware.

That does not automatically make one MikroTik model β€œbetter” than another. A hAP model may fit one deployment, while a cellular-enabled Chateau model may make more sense when LTE or 5G connectivity is part of the design. The site requirements should lead the choice.

What do you look at first when choosing a router for a new site?
