SpaceX’s latest launch has raised the potential for all kinds of new space-based infrastructure, including data centers. It is noted that the commercialization of space is nothing new, however the idea of a network of data centers orbiting the earth “still seemed more science fiction than fact until very recently”.

In this article, the author states that “while SpaceX and others may have answered the question of how to put data centers in orbit, the “why” is a bit more challenging”, adding that a number of startups are focusing specifically on space-based connectivity and data storage. Laser Light Communications (who recently collaborated with Equinix) for example, have developed some potential business models and intend to launch a “constellation of laser-enabled satellites”.

Kaladhar Voruganti, vice president of Technology Innovation and senior fellow at Equinix, contributed to a blog post in which industry experts shared their predictions for 2018. One such suggestion is a surge in the application of subsea cable networks, with construction costs expected to exceed $2 billion in 2018 for the third consecutive year. Mr. Voruganti highlights adds “customers of subsea systems that land inside Equinix data centers that support this model get direct, low-latency access to the numerous industry ecosystems also hosted by Equinix”.
