Threads can unlock a "private" Instagram account đź‘€
Many people assume that making their Instagram profile private also limits what others can learn about them. In reality, Threads can expose valuable OSINT breadcrumbs.
Because Threads accounts are directly linked to Instagram, they share the same username. That connection alone can help confirm that two profiles belong to the same person—even if one of them has since changed its username.
The bigger issue is privacy settings. When Threads launched, many users left their Threads profiles public without realizing those settings were independent of Instagram. As a result, a private Instagram account may still have a public Threads profile revealing:
• Posts, replies, and likes
• Followers and following lists
• Bio details that aren't present on Instagram
• Searchable public content through Threads' full-text search
Even interactions with other public accounts can help map relationships, interests, and communities.
In OSINT, investigations rarely start with a complete picture. They start with a single breadcrumb—a username, a bio, or a public interaction—and each clue helps build the next.
Privacy is rarely defined by a single platform. It's shaped by the connections between them.
