Many years into the future, when at least we have turned into dust and our future generations in Singapore will be living on solidly constructed housing blocks on what is now still largely sea, we will rest assured knowing that the base soil will be a layer of thick, clean sediment, devoid of iron debris. Just as things started to look good with the arrival of the New Year, a corner of the world has gone into strife mode. We and the destruction and loss of lives that come with it. Enough is being said about this so we wont add to the bytes.

Millions of dollars of Adspend will definitely gain brand awareness, eyeballs and brand recall during a new customer acquisition spree and retention of existing customers, but cannot create brand equity on its own terms. Positive equity takes years to build (& lose) and it has much to do with a product or service as with the culture built around it. Positive equity creates loyalty and hardly much overhead to maintain it.

Nothing else really earns as much positive brand equity as a good product or service does. And there is no greater validation of this than when a customer seeks out your brand out of recall due to positive equity.

We have been writing about paperless practices and how critical it is for organizations to junk the conventional approach of updating excel spreadsheets to manage assets. No only does this lead to potential errors, this also does not provide a holistic, multi-user, anytime, anywhere access to the asset status landscape.

In addition, precise locationing of existing fixed or mobile assets is beyond the capability of most asset management software. This feature usually requires a seamless integration of IoT (Internet of Things) components into the product and that capability is quite rare since the technologies involved are from two different eras.

Lets take a shallow dive into the underlying technology for tracking of assets. '𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱' is as critical a question as '𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁' or '𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁'. A feature of Precise asset location tracking in any software gives it a compelling edge over many others in the playing field. Being able to precisely locate expensive mobile assets can help to contain a lot of organizational spending in needless asset duplication.

Lets take an oil rig or a warehouse for instance. A dense metal superstructure across several floors, often ten to hundreds of meters high where a 3G/4G or GSM network based geolocation feature may be unavailable or simply not feasible. Therefore, we need alternate devices - namely 𝗟𝗼𝗥𝗮 (Long Range) - a spread spectrum modulation technique derived from chirp spread spectrum (𝗖𝗦𝗦) technology; and a combination of multiple 𝗟𝗼𝗥𝗮/𝗕𝗟𝗘 (Bluetooth Low Energy) tags and 𝗕𝗟𝗘 Beacons. Of course, for an oil rig infrastructure, the asset tags and beacons need to be housed in -certified enclosures, while the gateways can be housed in designated safety zones

BLE/LoRa and can interchangeably function as or distributed throughout the rig infrastructure as . Assets themselves can be fixed or mobile. The tags and beacons communicate internally and precise location triangulation is computed on a local or cloud network server. The location information is subsequently relayed to the on-premises LoRa gateway for onward transmission to the cloud.

When BLE/LoRa tags are affixed onto assets, they particularly suit a location with relatively fewer moving or fixed assets. The BLE/LoRa tags can even be equipped with an optional GPS module for outdoor tracking. When BLE Beacons are affixed on assets, they particularly suit a location with higher intensity of moving or fixed assets.

Suitably interchanging BLE/LoRa tags and BLE Beacons with appropriately positioned 𝗟𝗼𝗥𝗮 gateways, a low-cost infrastructure for precise location tracking of assets can be set up.

𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀

Having designed, manufactured and distributed tangible, physical assets from right from Venezuela to New Zealand, being deployed in tough ambient conditions, we have seen and learnt a lot.

In order to undertake an asset related activity, the operator is required to extract information from various legacy silos and precious time is wasted in the process. Asset maintenance work often impacts the service standards as the correct historical information extraction takes time and holds up the repair or location of the asset.

Work Orders need to printed out from legacy ERP systems. Once updated manually, these queue up in the in-tray of the data entry operator to be entered into the 'system'.

Annual audits are labor and time consuming and relevant information is required from multiple sources. Worst of all, often the precise current location and latest status or condition of the equipment is not updated.

The existing asset management systems are not designed to offer mobility. Current process requires the information to be printed out in worksheets or updated in legacy systems. Presently, the activity is human dependent and there is an inability to track and optimize assets, parts and budget for the same. Precise asset location is lacking in the feature list of legacy ERP systems.

Clearly there is an urgent need for an integrated system which is able to centralize the data base, offer secure access to various types of users, enable updates, offer easy import/export of the data and is as ‘open’ a system as possible using the latest technologies and eliminates needless motion wastage. Paper checklists and picture updates in separate devices are daily tasks and often eat up considerable avoidable minutes to collate, assimilate and sort out. How many monthly hours are wasted in such daily assimilations?

Not being able to locate an asset with reasonable precision - of say, meter to sub-meter accuracy is a critical business handicap, often overlooked and usually has recurring cost implications because something is not found quickly enough especially when it is required urgently. How many times have organizations purchased additional sets of mobile assets (eg mobile welding machines, mobile gensets, etc) because they could not locate them in time?

Need to immediately access the warranty document for a particular asset? Does anyone even know where these are stored? How about the insurance document or even the operating manual? Is there a way to attach these to the individual asset data and have everything in a centralized silo? When can you finally go around feeling absolutely secure knowing that your asset data - latest status updates, documents, pictures, tasks are all accessible from your mobile device?
