🎛️ Transformer Insights #3: Not All Core Materials Behave the Same! When people compare transformers, they often focus on specifications like bandwidth, impedance, or frequency response. But one of the most important design choices is something you don't immediately see: the core material.

Different core materials have different magnetic properties, which means they behave differently depending on the application. C-cores are known for their excellent magnetic stability and are a reliable choice in many demanding applications.

Laminated cores have been trusted in transformer design for decades, offering robust performance and proven reliability across a wide range of uses.
Amorphous cores provide unique performance characteristics, but they also require more careful handling in certain situations due to their sensitivity to DC magnetization.

Each material brings its own strengths—and its own design considerations.
At Lundahl Transformers, selecting the right core material is one of the first decisions we make during the design process. It's never about choosing the "best" material—it's about choosing the right material for the job.

Did you know that Lundahl Transformers started with Lars Lundahl And Gunnel Lundahl. We are still today very proud to have women in leading roles across very different parts of the business. Maria Berghäll, CMO. Fitore Hasani, Production Manager. Both are very active and helping our customer, and building the Lundahl experience. 💙

The new Focusrite ISA C8X brings the heritage of the ISA range into a modern studio interface, with Lundahl LL1538 transformers at the heart of its first two preamp channels. The LL1538 and the LL1538XL are high performance microphone input transformers, each with a high permeability mu-metal core and two three-section coils.

In the LL1538XL the core is about 45% larger than in the LL1538, resulting in a larger level capability. In both types, primary and secondary windings are separated by electrostatic shields. The three-section winding structure of the transformers results in a very low leakage inductance and thus an excellent frequency response. The transformers are encapsulated in mu-metal cases for magnetic shielding.

⭐ Product highlight: LL1584 problem solvers ⭐

All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others (From Animal Farm by George Orwell). There are many XLR-XLR in-line isolation units on the market. They pretty much look the same, so what is the difference, and why should you pay substantially more for a Lundahl unit compared to units of other brands?

When audio input transformers are used inside pro audio equipment, they are normally specified to handle 10 – 20 dB higher signal levels than normal “line level”. The reason is to guarantee that in all possible situations, the input transformers will never saturate and thus ruin the signal quality.

The ONLY XLR-XLR inline units on the market that gives you similar signal level margins are our LL1584 (and LL156X ) units. Most units on the market will break up ground loops, which is the most common problem in live sound situations. But only a few units on the market will provide the same signal integrity normally found in standard input transformers.

Next time you are using an XLR inline unit, make sure it is a unit more equal than others.
