Sequential valve gating is when individual gates in a mold are opened and closed independently. It is helpful in many cases but especially for filling very long parts or parts with very uneven distribution of mass/volume. By independently opening and closing gates at pre-determined events, such as at a certain time, screw position, or cavity pressure, it can control the location of or even eliminate weld lines or help with cascade filling. Weld line control is critical to ensure strength in parts that contain thin or grill-like features.

Part thickness variation and uneven shrinkage are the main causes of sink marks. The key to tackling these surface quality problems is improving the part & mold design, such as reducing the thickness of ribs, improving the cooling layout, relocating gate position, or enlarging the gate diameter. By using Moldex3D’s sink mark analysis to predict the occurrence and severity of sink marks before tool manufacturing, designers and plastics engineers can ensure a better design and optimal process settings!

If you haven't seen it yet, we have an updated guideline for implicit analyses!

Some of the news in this version are:
* Added section on strain rate effects in implicit analyses
* Added section on multistage analyses using *CASE and dynain.lsda
* General corrections and updates

DYNAMore Nordic provides the Guideline for implicit analyses using LS-DYNA to help you with implicit simulations in LS-DYNA. The guideline includes suggested baseline control card settings, recommended element types, contact definitions, and some small examples of different analysis types. An updated version is available for our customers on our Client Area; contact support for log-in details.

LS-DYNA R13.1.0 is now available for download for all common platforms, including Linux and Windows. Version R13.1.0 contains many enhancements, bug fixes, and selected new features. New features include that the ICFD fluid solver fully supports species transport capabilities and a material model for composites that supports probabilistic modeling (*MAT_COMPOSITE_TABULATED_PLASTICITY_DAMAGE).

Significant new features are generally reserved for substantial versions; the next major version will be R14.0.0, which may appear later this year.

The injection molding cooling time is determined mainly by the thickness of the injection molded parts; other significant factors are the plastic melt temperature, mold temperature, and heat transfer properties of the plastic and mold material. This graph shows cooling time estimations vs. thickness for several polymers. The main difference is thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and filler type.

Having a well-balanced filling is key to successful injection molding. However, it is difficult to predict and identify critical factors that lead to flow imbalances without a dedicated analysis tool. Simulation enables part designers and molders to determine the primary cause of flow imbalances by visualizing the melt flow inside the mold cavity early in the design phase, thus avoiding part defects such as short shots, air traps, weld lines, etc.

If you want to learn more about using simulation with Moldex3D to avoid flow imbalance, watch the on-demand webinar: www.moldex3d.com/on_demand_webinar/predicting-flow-imbalances-in-your-injection-molds/

Watch our webinars when it suits you! All our webinars are available through streaming for a limited time in the same place you find the webinar. So, if you missed our last webinar about parameter identification for GISSMO and DIEM damage models in LS-DYNA, there is still time!

Adding any of these models to your material makes it possible to simulate stress state-based ductile fracture. However, the damage models require identifying parameters determined from material testing, which can be challenging.

Parameter identification for GISSMO and DIEM damage models April 7th: 10.00 - 11.00GISSMO and DIEM are two very popular "add-on" damage models in LS-DYNA. By adding any of these models to your material it is possible to simulate stress state based ductile fracture for both solids and shell structure...
