What happens when you put ThinLinc + VirtualGL and XRDP + VirtualGL through the same test?

In this short demo, Harjinder compares both on the same AlmaLinux 9.8 VDA, using the same settings and the UNIGINE Superposition 1.1 benchmark. The test setup includes an NVIDIA P4000 GPU, VirtualGL 3.1.4, XCP-ng, and ThinLinc 4.21 Beta. It’s a great example of the hands-on testing and experimentation happening in the ThinLinc Community.

Another piece of ThinLinc 4.21.0 is all about keeping up with modern ARM hardware.

As ARM systems have moved decisively to 64-bit, the old 32-bit ThinLinc client increasingly required compatibility libraries that weren’t always available or reliable. That changes with 4.21.0.

The release introduces a native 64-bit ARM client that installs and runs without any extra setup. The Raspberry Pi 5 is one example of hardware that benefits from this change.

And if you’re following our recent ARM64 updates, this is the client side. Native ThinLinc Server support for ARM64 is a separate project currently under active development.

Another piece of ThinLinc 4.21.0 is about control.

Administrators can now define mandatory settings on managed endpoint devices. Once configured, these settings cannot be changed by the user.

Why does that matter?

It helps organizations enforce specific configurations, such as automatically closing the ThinLinc client when a smart card is removed, or restricting connections to a single predefined ThinLinc server.

More control for admins. Fewer settings to worry about for users.

And that’s just another piece of what’s inside 4.21.0. 👀

Samuel Mannehed recently shared an update on the ThinLinc Community: the foundational work for native ThinLinc Server support on ARM64 is complete, and active development is now underway.

There’s no release timeline to share yet. But we’re already looking ahead — and we want to hear from the people who could put it to the test. As Robert Henschel points out, HPC centers in particular are encouraged to reach out for early testing.
