The SIG ICT Support Unit was mandated by a cabinet decision (RF461/1/9) in 2011 to provide Whole of Government ICT Support services. These services include the coordination, delivery and support of any ICT project for the Solomon Islands Government. To carry out this mandate, in 2012, the unit had put out a tender for the construction and installation of Government Metropolitan Area Network both N
ationally and Internationally. CBO Telecommunication, a company based in Brisbane in partnership Satellite Solution, a Honiara based entity was awarded the tender. In June 2013, Government Metropolitan Area Network was launched and was officially called SIG-Connect. SIG-Connect now connect government offices over 90 different locations within Honiara. The network stretches from Tetere Correctional Service to White River Police Post. The network is managed and maintained by the SIG ICT Support Unit. The connection of Government Ministries to SIG-Connect is scheduled to take 12 months and will commence early 2014. A procurement of Enterprise datacenter is in progress and is expected to be fully installed and operational by end of January 2014. This will enable the SIG-Connect rollout to whole of Government Ministries by end of 2014. The SIG ICT Support Unit was established under Ministry of Finance and Treasury with three core functions which are aimed at reducing the ICT burden to Ministries and to ensure there is consistency in the delivery of ICT Advice and Services.

The core purpose of the SIG ICTSU is to remove the ICT burden and make ICT to become an enabling tool which allows Ministries to focus on delivering their corporate objectives.
