In 1997, German artist Hans Hemmert staged an installation called Level at Galerie Gebauer in Berlin, often remembered as the “same-height party.”

Guests were invited to select from fifty pairs of specially constructed platform shoes, ranging in size from 5 to 43 centimeters, designed so that everyone stood exactly two meters tall. Built from Styrodur (rigid foam), rubber, and Velcro, the extenders were both practical and symbolic, transforming the group into a living bar graph of human height variance.

The project fell under the movement of Relational Aesthetics, which focused on participatory, interactive art rather than static objects.

Hemmert, a sculptor known for using playful, lightweight materials like balloons, was also part of the artist collective Inges Idee, which specialized in site-specific interventions. By equalizing every participant’s stature, Level confronted the subtle social influence of height, how it shapes perceptions of authority, confidence, and attractiveness, while turning the gallery into a space of literal and figurative eye-to-eye conversation.
