What if life’s genetic alphabet wasn’t fixed?

For billions of years, every known form of life has relied on the same 20 amino acids to build proteins, the fundamental machinery of biology. Now, scientists have pushed that rule further than ever before by creating synthetic bacteria capable of surviving with one of those amino acids partially removed.

The result is more than a biological experiment. It’s a glimpse into a future where life itself becomes programmable.

With the help of AI, researchers redesigned essential proteins inside bacteria, allowing them to function with a simplified molecular “language.” In doing so, they opened the door to entirely new forms of synthetic biology: designer proteins, longer-lasting medicines, and organisms engineered with capabilities never seen in nature.

But this breakthrough also raises a deeper question.

Menopause can present a challenge that often goes unnoticed: changes in memory and cognitive function.

A study shows that machine learning models can identify, more quickly and affordably, women at risk of subjective cognitive decline during this transition.

Instead of relying on complex and expensive tests, these models use simpler data, such as questionnaires on lifestyle, mental health, and medical history, to detect patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This is important because cognitive decline during menopause doesn’t just affect quality of life. In some cases, it can also signal an increased risk of future neurodegenerative diseases.

The potential here is not to replace medical diagnosis, but to anticipate it.

And that shifts the paradigm: from treating when symptoms are already advanced, to intervening earlier, with more context and greater precision.
