We're in the 3rd week of June, Pride Month! As Whitesmith, we are a team of people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, some of us being part of the LGBTQ+ community. We want to take the opportunity while Pride Month still lasts to share bits of information that bring awareness and understanding of LGBTQ+ people and give some hints on how to be an ally, in case you're wondering where to start.
In the words of one of our own: "Pride is a tough concept to understand. I think we tend to relate it to selfishness, but that’s not what it's about. Pride is about dignity, it’s about having a self identity that is acknowledged and accepted.
Last year, I discovered the Riddle Scale (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riddle_scale). It's used to describe the multiple levels of discrimination and anti-discrimination towards someone’s sexual orientation. If you can and want to, take a moment to read it through and see where you would put yourself. You don’t need to tell anyone where you are, this is internal work for you to do with yourself. Although the language of the scale is focused on homosexuality, it can in fact be used for any other topic that causes divisive opinions. It could even be used to understand how you view yourself: do you nurture yourself? "
