🌍 The European Central Bank just changed the economics of climate risk.

Not through a new ESG regulation.

Not through another reporting requirement.

💶 Through money.

The ECB has decided to extend climate factors from corporate bonds to eligible corporate loans used as collateral in Eurosystem refinancing operations.

What does this mean in practice?

Companies with higher climate risk, weaker transition plans and limited climate evidence may indirectly become less attractive from a financing perspective, as loans to those companies can be subject to additional climate-related valuation adjustments in the Eurosystem collateral framework.

⚠️ Climate risk is no longer just an environmental issue. It’s becoming a financial one.

For the past month, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming and Isaiah Sabiniano from the University of California, Berkeley to the OWLplaces team as part of the international internship program sponsored by Instituto Pedro Nunes

During their internship, Saba worked on simulating extreme wildfire events, while Isaiah focused on simulating extreme flood events.

Their work contributed to one of the core goals we pursue at OWLplaces: helping organizations understand where their assets are located, quantify how climate risks and extreme events could affect them, and identify what actions they can take to build resilience and sustainability.

The wildfire and flood simulations will help our clients gain tangible insights into their main vulnerabilities and identify where investment priorities should be placed to strengthen resilience.
