We are pleased to announce Kirk Woolford as the keynote speaker at EIMAD’26 – the 10th International Meeting on Music, Art and Design Research.

Kirk Woolford is Professor of Immersive Arts and Technologies, and founding director of the Institute for Creative Technologies at Norwich University of the Arts, where he leads research on visualisation and simulation of natural environments and Embodied AI, in partnership with the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, University of Bristol, the Broads National Park, Sony Europe, et al. His transdisciplinary has been funding through awards from the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC), Arts Council England (ACE), Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and others.

Kirk will speak to us on: “When climate science is frightening, how can we engage with it?”. In recent decades, STEM disciplines have taken the lead in collecting and modelling data on climate change. But the presentation of cold, hard scientific data often leads to climate anxiety, fear, frustration and resignation. How can artists and designers engage with affected communities to better understand and prepare for environmental change? How can we foster empathy, to show that taking action is not futile? How can we reconnect with the landscapes?

It is with deep sadness that the organising committee of the EIMAD – International Meeting of Research in Music, Arts and Design marks the passing of Jorge Frascara (1939–2026).

A distinguished keynote speaker at EIMAD 2024, Jorge Frascara was not only a leading figure in communication design, but a thinker of rare clarity and integrity. His work consistently challenged the discipline to move beyond aesthetics, placing emphasis on communication effectiveness, social responsibility, and the real impact of design on people’s lives.

Frascara’s intellectual legacy reshaped design practice and education. Through his academic work, most notably at the University of Alberta, and his leadership within international design organisations, he contributed to redefining design as a socially oriented, user-centred discipline. His publications, including Design and Communication, User-Centred Graphic Design, and What is Information Design?, remain essential references for both researchers and practitioners.

What distinguished Frascara was not only the rigour of his thought, but his ethical commitment: design, for him, only made sense if it improved human interaction, supported understanding, and contributed to people’s wellbeing. He advocated for a model of design grounded in responsibility, empathy, and clarity, principles that remain urgent and necessary today.

For EIMAD, it was an honour to have welcomed him as a keynote speaker. His contribution enriched our community and left a lasting intellectual and human impression.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues, and all those who were influenced by his work and generosity.

Jorge Frascara’s legacy endures, as a guide for practising design with purpose, rigour, and respect.
