We are often asked certain questions, during meetings, conferences, events. We will try to answer all of them in a series of posts.

We start with the most common one.

Docker Swarm was created to orchestrate containers. Although Kubernetes do exist, Docker Swarm is still being used.

Some would ask why? There are many advantages over Kubernetes.
Docker Swarm is straightforward to install, lightweight and easy to use. Docker Swarm takes less time to understand than any Kubernetes distribution. Kubernetes can be too complicated to justify some deployments and has steep learning curve.

And there is Onteon. It gives more capabilities than Docker Swarm, still being simple to learn and use. With built-in scaling, self-healing, fault tolerance, RBAC, SSL, monitoring and log management, etc. it can be next step to develop modern architecture with simplified stack.

And for some of you that want to simplify their architectures and save resources, native microservices and applications (without containers) can be used and managed by Onteon.

Według różnych globalnych badań skumulowany roczny wskaźnik wzrostu edge computing znajduje się pomiędzy 30 a 40%.

To bardzo duży wzrost.

A jak wygląda edge computing w przemyśle?
Według raportu "IoT Signals - Manufacturing Spotlight" (Intel Corporation, , IoT Analytics ) firmy wdrażają strategie przetwarzania brzegowego. 38% przedsiębiorstw już wdrożyło rozwiązania edge w halach produkcyjnych, a 48% prowadzi rozwój w tym obszarze. To by wskazywało na wysoką adopcję tego typu zastosowań.

Tymczasem w raporcie Computerworld dotyczącym Polski "Przemysł 4.0 – krok w kierunku bezpieczeństwa przemysłowego" (partner Intel Corporation i Polcom), na pytanie o nowoczesne technologie, które będą miały największy wpływ na rozwój firm, tylko 16% badanych wskazało edge computing, plasując ten obszar dopiero na ósmym miejscu.

Ponieważ raport Computerworld był sporządzany w 2021 roku a raport "IoT Signals" pochodzi z sierpnia 2022, pozostaje mieć nadzieję, że różnica się zmniejszyła.

Edge computing w połączeniu z budową chmury prywatnej wydaje się jedną z rozsądniejszych opcji budowy nowoczesnej architektury przetwarzania, spełniającej wymagania biznesu, a jednocześnie obniżającej inne ryzyka.

Bowiem według badania Computerworld aż 32% przedsiębiorstw nie planuje inwestować w rozwiązania chmurowe (chmury publicznej) - 49% z nich obawia się utraty kontroli nad przetwarzaniem i bezpieczeństwem danych.

Cloud providers extended the life of their servers. Google and Amazon annonuced it the first quarter of 2022. Microsoft announced in August stretching the life of their machines by two years. It means they are not introducing new computing power with the same pace as in previous years.

In the meantime prices of cloud services are going up. Google Cloud storage prices will rise in October. Microsoft increase the price of Office 365, OVH Cloud increase prices of some services by 10%.
Most data centers, if not all, are hit by increased energy costs. Research in UK showed in some cases more than 40% of data centers' operating cost is electricity.

In this situation choosing the software that is efficient and save costs is becoming crucial. What's more important applications running and communicating on Onteon achieve performance up to 70% better than on Kubernetes & Istio. How does it translate to cost savings?

Applications on Onteon in the test processed 68452 requests per one vCPU, while Kubernetes 40349, in the same time period. So if your goal is to process one million of customer requests, you need 15 vCPU for applications running on Onteon, and 25 vCPU for applications on Kubernetes.

You save 10 vCPU and you save on all operating costs including licences and energy to run your business.
