During my holiday in the Scottish Highlands, I completely fell under the spell of those vast, misty landscapes. This incredible music became the true soundtrack to my journey. Singing in Scottish Gaelic, Julie Fowlis creates something truly spellbinding—filled with immense space, tradition, and profound peace.

Listening and reading. Reading and listening.

It started as a little Instagram riddle: what do Michael Jackson’s BAD and the Sony CDP-R1 have in common?

The simple answer is 1987.

But then I started digging.

BAD was recorded and mixed by the legendary Bruce Swedien, using his Acusonic recording process and Mitsubishi digital recorders. The X-850 32-track was one of the most advanced digital studio machines of its time, with the final mix recorded to a Mitsubishi X-86 digital two-track.

And in exactly the same year, on the other side of the recording chain, Sony introduced the CDP-R1 / DAS-R1 — its extraordinary statement of what digital playback at home could become.

So tonight I’m listening to my original BAD CD on an R1 while reading a 1988 interview with Bruce Swedien about how he made records.

And then there is the sound.

Today I added our BOB open-baffle bass modules to the OGYs. The OGYs, driven by a 300B SET, give me the detail, speed and intimacy. Four large open-baffle woofers, driven separately by the Marantz PM-16 through our bi-amp interface, give the music its foundation and scale.

I thought I knew this album.

Apparently I didn’t.

The bass on BAD is astonishing — deep, effortless, almost velvety. It doesn’t just hit. It seems to breathe, swell and move through the music. And above it, all those layers Swedien put there almost forty years ago suddenly make sense.

Then I came across this sentence at the beginning of his 1988 interview:

“The only reason we’re in the studio is for the music. Nothing else.”

Almost forty years later, sitting here listening to what he recorded, that feels like the right place to stop.

From render to reality.

A few weeks ago, this existed only on our computer screen. Now the first pair is standing in our listening room.

This is the first OGY we’ve built combining exposed birch plywood with 6 mm black Corian® side panels.

I finally spent some proper time listening to this pair yesterday, too. And yes — they sound absolutely wonderful.

And this very first pair already has a very special owner waiting for it… a long way from home.

Single driver. No crossover. Transmission line.
