🎙️ How do you accidentally become a WordPress plugin developer?

Back in 2015, a client asked our co-founder Jonathan for a simple WooCommerce sales report. It didn't exist yet, so he built it - and released it for free after a plugin marketplace rejected it for being "too simple."

That was the start of an 11-year journey building WordPress products, dozens of plugins, and a beautiful beginning for the Ninjalytics plugin. Jonathan is now co-founder and CTO of BerryPress.

He recently joined the WP Product Talk podcast to talk about that journey. We put together the highlights: how we pick which plugin ideas are worth building today, where we look for new product ideas, and whether AI has closed the door on new plugin developers (spoiler: no, but you have to work harder for trust now).

The BerryPress team is back home after an incredible time at WordCamp Europe 2026 in Kraków! 🦖🏰

This year’s edition was incredibly special for us. Exactly one year ago, our CEO Anna took her first steps into the WordPress community just as BerryPress was launching. Today, we are a growing international team of seven - and WCEU was the perfect opportunity for (almost) all of us to finally meet and hang out face-to-face offline! 🤝

Beyond the amazing vibe and networking, we experienced the true spirit of open source. We joined in on Contributor Day, and thanks to some amazing developers and the WordPress community, we even managed to squash a stubborn tech bug in right on the spot! 🛠️
