Why and how do we measure CO₂?
Carbon dioxide is important to keep our planet warm enough to support life - it is called the greenhouse effect. Without CO₂ in the atmosphere, the energy that is delivered by the Sun to Earth's surface would just radiate back into space as heat, leaving our planet cold and hostile to live. Too much CO₂ however causes the average temperature to rise. While there are natural cycles in the Earth's history where CO₂ concentration rises and falls, it is the current speed of change that may not allow time for many species to adapt and cause their extinction.

Humans are directly sensitive to CO₂ levels. Without proper ventilation, a carbon dioxide concentration can rise in rooms to levels that can cause discomfort.
Generally CO₂ levels:
up to 1000 ppm are considered comfortable,
1000-2000 ppm are known to cause drowsiness
over 2000 ppm - stagnant, stale, stuffy air - will cause headaches, sleepiness poor concentration, loss of attention, and increased heart rate.
