Has modern technology become too fragile to withstand a storm?

Modern electronics are far more susceptible to damage than systems from decades ago. This is a direct result of miniaturization. Although devices are smaller and faster, their physical resistance to power surges has dropped dramatically for several key reasons:

👉 Limited thermal resistance: Smaller components overheat instantly when exposed to excess surge energy.
👉 Delicate PCB structure: Extremely narrow copper traces in densely packed circuits can literally vaporize under the influence of surge current.
👉 Lower operating voltages: The drop in nominal voltages in digital circuits means that even minor voltage spikes become fatal for communication interfaces.
👉 Standard ESD protection is insufficient: Effective protection systems require high-power components, for which there is no space inside devices. Furthermore, such protection must have a properly designed energy dissipation path to ground, which internal electronic circuits typically do not provide.

PTF-64-EXT/PoE – 4-channel surge protector for Gigabit LAN network.

In LAN networks and monitoring systems, as much as 90% of electronic failures result from surges induced by atmospheric discharges near the installation. To ensure reliable device protection according to the PN-EN 62305-4 standard, it is essential to use surge protectors at the boundary of LPZ zones.

PTF-64-EXT/PoE from Ewimar offers advanced signal and PoE power protection, as well as:

• 3-stage protection: gas arrester, TVS, MOSFET – effectiveness 1kA (10/350 μs) and 2.5kA (8/20 μs) per conductor, residual voltage < 8 V.
• Full PoE and Hi-PoE compatibility: standards 802.3 at, af, bt (max 60 W/channel).
• Multiple use: the protector does not wear out during standard operation and responds multiple times to surges.
• Certification: tests compliant with PN-EN 61643-21 standard.

In practice, the device is installed near the switch in combination with single-channel protectors mounted at cameras, which ensures comprehensive network protection against surges induced on LAN segments. The excess energy generated by the surge is instantly diverted to grounding, protecting sensitive system components and ensuring continuous operation of the installation. Thanks to compatibility with 19’’ Rack enclosures, it is possible to neatly install several modules in one cabinet, maintaining order and full system functionality.
