𦣠FROZEN FOR 50,000 YEARS! BABY MAMMOTH YANA IS ONE OF THE WORLDβS BEST-PRESERVED DISCOVERIES βοΈ
Scientists in Siberia, Russia, have unveiled the remarkably preserved remains of a baby mammoth named Yana, estimated to be more than 50,000 years old. She was discovered in the Batagaika crater in the Yakutia region, where thawing permafrost exposed her ancient body.
Yana is believed to have been just over one year old when she died. She weighs more than 100 kilograms and measures about 120 centimeters tall and 200 centimeters long. Her head and trunk are exceptionally well preserved, giving researchers a rare opportunity to study the soft tissues of an Ice Age animal. Scientists believe the permanently frozen ground helped preserve her remains for tens of thousands of years.
Researchers at North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk are studying Yana to learn more about mammoths and their ancient environment. Her discovery also highlights how melting permafrost can reveal extraordinary prehistoric remains while raising concerns about the loss of permanently frozen ground.
π¬ If scientists could uncover one more perfectly preserved Ice Age animal, which species would you most want them to find?
