Testing the Piles Behind the Expressway

STS has conducted Pile Dynamic Analysis (PDA) for Malir Expressway (Shahrah-e-Bhutto) project in Karachi, one of the major road infrastructure projects of the city.

This test consists of a hammer blow to the pile head and recording of strain and acceleration on the pile. These readings are used by our engineers to determine the load capacity of the pile, the resistance of the soil along the shaft and at the base, and the condition of the pile. It is a quick and accurate method to verify that the piles will support the loads placed in the design, without the time and expense of a complete static load test.

The testing was conducted on an elevated corridor where all piles are subjected to a constant heavy traffic, therefore, testing was done under close supervision and reported promptly to ensure continuous construction activity.

In-Situ Pressure Meter Testing at DP World Jetty

STS conducted Pressure meter Tests (PMT) in boreholes drilled across the water from the steel working platform on the DP World jetty. The probe was then lowered to the desired test depths and expanded against the borehole wall in controlled steps, and pressure and volume measurements were made at each step.

In contrast to tests on recovered samples, the pressure meter tests the behavior of the natural undisturbed ground. Key results from these tests are the in-situ deformation modulus and limit pressure of the soil, which are important factors for the design of piles and marine structures under lateral and vertical loading. The activity of the port required careful coordination, constant monitoring and safety precautions from the platform.

Building the Ground – We Built the Platform Before We Built the Data

STS has successfully completed geotechnical investigation works over water at the DP World jetty, where the absence of stable ground, active port operations and restricted access required a specialized approach.

To create a safe working area, STS designed, fabricated and installed a purpose built steel working platform extending from the existing jetty toward the waterfront. The complete scope, from design and inhouse fabrication to lifting and installation, was executed by our own team in compliance with applicable safety standards. Believed to be the first platform of its kind built in Pakistan for geotechnical investigation, it allowed rigs, equipment and personnel to operate safely directly above the required locations.

WE BUILT OUR OWN GROUND TO WORK FROM

The steel working platform was installed and STS then carried out geotechnical investigation works directly over the water at the DP World jetty. The drilling rig, tripod assembly and supporting equipment were placed and secured on the platform and kentledge was placed to ensure stability during the drilling operation.

The work over open water and with an active port involved demanded careful sequencing, constant supervision and strict safety measures. Boreholes were extended and samples were taken in a controlled manner, providing subsurface information that would not have been available from traditional land-based drilling at these sites.
