ππ€ Exciting news from Waymo! π€π
We're thrilled to announce that Waymo is launching driverless passenger services for our employees in Austin, Texas, starting this Wednesday! π This marks a significant step forward in developing our autonomous ride-hailing program, Waymo One.
Our driverless rides will cover a 43-square-mile area of Austin, including downtown and large neighborhoods. While this service will initially be for our employees, we have big plans to extend it to the general public in the future, making Austin the fourth city where our robotaxis will officially operate, following Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix. π
Our journey with Austin began in October 2015 when we gave a blind man a ride in our prototype car, showing our long-term interest in the city as a hub for AV testing and operations. Texas' regulatory environment is more favorable, providing an essential part of our expansion plans in the state.
This announcement comes on the heels of our recent permission to charge for rides in expanded regions, including Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. It's all part of our strategy to gradually extend our autonomous ride-hailing program despite challenges in the AV market. For example, GMβs Cruise is under investigation by the US government, and Ford-backed Argo AI has suspended operations. Despite these hurdles and our own recent mishaps, including a collision in San Francisco, we're committed to moving forward with our development plans.
Waymo One is a significant part of our revenue, especially since we paused our autonomous trucking program. Expanding our service into Austin demonstrates our dedication to advancing AV technology and providing innovative transportation solutions to more people. ππ
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to revolutionize transportation with Waymo One!
