Global Positioning System (GPS) has replaced the traditional cellular network based position location resulting in tracking systems with pinpoint accuraci
es. These GPS devices are now embedded in off the shelf cell phones allowing for exciting location based services to be developed. Traditional terrain databases that consisted of coarse elevation data at 10m or 30m intervals are being replaced by accurate 3D building databases available for free. The computing power that is embedded in smart phones of today would have been acceptable for a desktop machine just a few years back. All these technological developments are only worthwhile if they can bring a positive change in the society. These technologies can help better connect the people, result in equitable distribution of resources, increase security and improve the healthcare and education systems.
