On April 13, 2026, the IETF published an Internet-Draft titled Internet Protocol Version 8 (IPv8). The draft explicitly states that IPv4 is a proper subset of IPv8, that IPv8 uses a 64-bit address space, and that it is designed to be backward compatible without a flag day or forced migration.

Although IPv6 has been deployed for more than twenty years, global migration has not progressed as expected because it is not compatible with the legacy IPv4 protocol.

Under the IPv8 design, IPv4 addresses are represented with an all-zero prefix and are fully compatible with IPv8. For example, the IPv4 address 172.16.1.1 would become 0.0.0.0.172.16.1.1.

Personally, I believe IPv8 may finally achieve the goals that IPv6 set out to accomplish, twenty years later.
