🚨 Two Incidents. One Chokepoint.
On 31 July, two separate security incidents were reported near the southern approach to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.
According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO):
1️⃣A tanker reported being struck by an unknown projectile, causing damage to its engine room near Lima, Oman.
2️⃣Hours later, another tanker reported a large explosion and splash close to the vessel near Khasab, Oman. The ship was not damaged, and all crew were reported safe.
Both incidents remain under investigation, and no group has claimed responsibility.
While the physical damage was limited, the timing and location are significant. The Strait of Hormuz carries a substantial share of the world’s seaborne oil, and even isolated security incidents can influence voyage planning, war-risk insurance, and energy markets.
For now, commercial vessels transiting the area are being urged to remain vigilant while authorities continue their investigations.
