One of our favorite memories from our advocacy work was seeing the Filipino Sign Language Font, developed by students of the Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf (MCCID), featured in the UPDate Magazine (July–December 2015, Volume 2, Number 2) published by the University of the Philippines Diliman.
The article recognized Filipino Sign Language as the language and identity of the Filipino Deaf community, while also showcasing the FSL font together with information on how to install and use it. It was encouraging to see a student-created accessibility project receive recognition in a respected academic publication.
The FSL Font was created to help educators, students, interpreters, researchers, and advocates include FSL handshapes in digital documents and learning materials. Although technology has evolved since 2015, we remain grateful that this project became a small part of the continuing story of Filipino Sign Language.
