oh my

SanDisk has revealed a new line of officially licensed PlayStation 5 SSDs, and the prices are already raising eyebrows. The Optimus GX PRO 850P drives are designed for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PC, with built-in heatsinks and PlayStation branding, but most of the lineup costs more than the console itself.

The 1TB model starts at $380, while the 2TB version costs $760 and the 4TB version jumps to $1,500. The 8TB model reaches an enormous $2,960, which is more than three times the price of a PS5 Pro. These prices are listed as discounted on SanDisk’s website, making the numbers even harder to ignore.

The drives use PCIe 4.0 technology and offer up to 7300MB/s read speeds and 6600MB/s write speeds, but their pricing shows how badly memory and storage costs have been hit by the current component crisis. With AI-driven demand for datacentres pushing up prices across consumer electronics, console manufacturers and hardware makers are struggling to keep costs down. Would you ever pay more for storage than for the console itself? 💾
