Home of the Best Dota Players: Remembering Katipunan’s Iconic Blueskies
Before home setups and esports arenas, there was Blueskies.
Tucked along Katipunan, the internet café became a proving ground for early DOTA players in the Philippines. Known simply as “Skies,” it drew students and “self-proclaimed greats” who treated every match like it meant something.
The stage wasn’t polished. Dim lights, worn chairs, and nonstop chatter filled the space. But focus was real. Headsets on, eyes locked in, games loud enough to spill across the room. This was where reputations formed, fast and public.
Players remember more than wins and losses. Affordable but delicious meals by Kuya Marlon, long hours (open time), and trashtalk (character building, I must say lol) that never really stopped. If you were good, word spread. If you were not, you found out quickly.
The gaming scene eventually shifted through the years, it was bittersweet. You never know what “innovation” takes from you until you’re standing at a point of no return. As a young man, I never knew what “youth is wasted on the young” meant. I still don’t today, but I certainly feel it in my chest.
But I digress, as the years marched on, internet improved, PCs got cheaper, and mobile gaming took over.
The crowds thinned, and places like Blueskies slowly faded. But its legacy holds. It helped shape a generation of Filipino players who learned the game side by side, one match at a time.
Thanks for the memories.
P.S. Salamat at saludo po kela kuya Marlon and kuya Jericho 🫱🏻🫲🏼
