FK Leads Capacity-Building Workshop for Rural Agricultural Workers in Palawan

In a strong push toward strengthening grassroots agricultural systems, FK, through its leaders John Vincent Gastanes and She Roa, facilitated a comprehensive three-day workshop for agricultural rural workers in Palawan. The activity was organized by the Provincial Government of Palawan in partnership with the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute (ATI).

The workshop brought together agricultural extension workers and community leaders across the province, equipping them with practical tools and strategies to enhance community organizing, resource mobilization, and sustainable agricultural development.

Building Stronger Communities Through Organizing

On the first day, John Vincent Gastanes led sessions on the foundations of community organizing, emphasizing its role in transforming agricultural communities. Participants explored the theories, principles, and history of organizing, as well as real-life case studies demonstrating successful models in rural and agricultural settings.

Gastanes highlighted that effective organizing goes beyond structure—it requires understanding people, building trust, and aligning community goals toward collective progress.

Equipping Leaders with Practical Tools

The second day focused on community mapping, planning, and leadership development, facilitated by She Roa. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises such as SWOT and PESTEL analysis, identifying key resources, challenges, and opportunities within their respective communities.

Through the “3Ps of Mapping—Places, People, and Power,” attendees were guided in analyzing their local environments and developing actionable strategies. The sessions also emphasized crafting shared visions, setting achievable goals, and building leadership capacities among farmers and community members.

Mobilizing Resources and Strengthening Partnerships

In the afternoon sessions, Roa introduced resource mobilization strategies, including identifying funding sources, developing proposals, and building partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and the private sector. Participants learned how to transform ideas into sustainable projects through effective collaboration and strategic planning.

From Learning to Action

The final day of the workshop centered on financial management, advocacy, and monitoring systems, with sessions designed to ensure the sustainability of community initiatives. Participants were guided in budgeting, transparent fund management, and policy engagement to support agricultural development.

A culminating group activity required participants to develop and present community-based action plans, applying the knowledge gained throughout the training to real-world agricultural challenges in Palawan.

Empowering the Frontliners of Agriculture

The workshop reinforced the critical role of agricultural extension workers as frontliners in rural development. By equipping them with both technical knowledge and community leadership skills, the initiative aims to create ripple effects—empowering farmers, strengthening cooperatives, and improving access to resources and markets.

For FK, the activity reflects its ongoing mission of building inclusive, community-driven agricultural ecosystems—where innovation meets grassroots leadership, and where no farmer is left behind.

Project Zacchaeus Marketing Cooperative Honored at Regional Gawad Saka 2025

The Department of Agriculture-MIMAROPA recently celebrated the Regional Gawad Saka 2025, a prestigious event dedicated to recognizing the outstanding contributions of the region’s agricultural and fisheries stakeholders. Held on December 2, 2025, at Selah Pods in Pasay City, the ceremony honored individuals and organizations that have demonstrated excellence, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to sustainable development and food security.

Celebrating Agricultural Excellence-

The Gawad Saka awards serve as a vital platform for showcasing best practices and success stories that uplift farming and fishing communities across MIMAROPA. This year's event paid tribute to the dedication of those whose hard work sustains regional economic growth.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of Project Zacchaeus Marketing Cooperative from Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. The cooperative was distinguished in the Agricultural Entrepreneur Category (Micro Enterprise) for its significant impact on:

- Strengthening market access for local producers.
- Advancing community-driven agricultural entrepreneurship.
- Empowering local farmers through innovative practices.

Leading the Way for Sustainable Development-

Representing the cooperative at the ceremony were Ms. Jofer Joy Malolos-Arroyo and Mr. Dennis Creach S. Barcelona. Their acceptance of the award symbolized the collective resilience and effort of the cooperative’s members in fostering inclusive growth within the agricultural sector.

The recognition of Project Zacchaeus Marketing Cooperative stands as a testament to the power of grassroots initiatives in driving regional development. As the Regional Gawad Saka 2025 concluded, it left participants with a renewed sense of pride and inspiration to continue supporting the agricultural entrepreneurs who serve as pillars of the nation.

Fresh from a national training and a long trip from Manila, Gastanes chose honesty and humility over slideshows. The forum became an open dialogue on purpose, service, and staying rooted in values. He shared real stories of building Farm Konekt—now operating in the BIMP-EAGA region and supported by partners like GGGI and USAID—from the ground up with nothing but faith, grit, and community.

More than a speech, it was a reminder: leadership is not prestige—it’s the quiet decision to serve, especially when no one is watching.

The main goal of this initiative was to explore opportunities to introduce pre-processed agricultural products, including clustered rice produce from the Philippines, into Brunei’s halal-certified market. With both nations having strong agricultural capabilities, the dialogue centered on co-developing trade pathways that improve access to quality, halal-compliant food products and empower smallholder farmers and fisherfolk in both countries.
