Ignite Telecoms — Changing the Way We Connect. 🔥
GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Telecommunications provider Ignite Telecommunications, Inc. has proposed disaster-resilient connectivity infrastructure across Region 12 following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on June 8 and subsequent flash floods that cut power and communications in General Santos City and Sarangani Province.
The proposed network solutions focus on fiber connectivity, network redundancy, alternative routes, and off-grid backup power to keep government agencies, emergency management offices, and evacuation centers operational during severe disasters.
"During a disaster, connectivity becomes a critical lifeline," said Nitz Rimando, vice president for sales and operations at Ignite Telecoms.
"When network infrastructure or power facilities are damaged, redundant connectivity and alternative network routes can help government and emergency response teams remain connected and continue coordinating relief and recovery operations."
The framework targets critical government facilities, disaster risk reduction and management offices, and evacuation centers to ensure uninterrupted data access while primary networks are repaired.
Ignite secured a 25-year legislative telecommunications franchise under Republic Act 11411 in 2019 and began deploying its domestic fiber network and submarine cable backbone across Mindanao in 2023.
"Disaster resilience is not simply about restoring connectivity after an incident," Rimando said. "It is about building network infrastructure with redundancy, diversity, and continuity in mind so that critical services can remain connected when they are needed most."
Local disaster risk reduction and management councils across SOCCSKSARGEN are evaluating the proposal to strengthen emergency coordination and information access during ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
