CHOOSING THE RIGHT CCTV CAMERA LENS MATTERS!
When choosing a CCTV camera, don’t look at megapixels alone. The lens focal length (mm) also determines how wide or narrow your camera can see.
Here’s a simple guide:
🔹 2.8mm – WIDE VIEW (~100°)
Ideal for large areas, entrances, parking spaces, open yards, and general area coverage.
🔹 4mm – STANDARD VIEW (~80°)
A good balance between coverage and detail. Suitable for general surveillance, hallways, entrances, and common areas.
🔹 6mm – NARROW VIEW (~50°)
Provides a more focused view. Useful for gates, doorways, corridors, and specific areas where you need a tighter field of view.
🔹 12mm – TELEPHOTO VIEW (~25°)
Designed for a much narrower field of view and can be useful for longer-distance monitoring and specific targets.
💡 EASY RULE TO REMEMBER:
👉 SMALLER MM = WIDER VIEW
👉 LARGER MM = NARROWER VIEW
But remember: the actual viewing angle can vary depending on the camera sensor, lens design, and manufacturer specifications.
📌 The right CCTV camera isn't always the one with the highest megapixels. The correct combination of resolution + lens + mounting position + distance + coverage area is what makes a surveillance system effective.
