Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., has been elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the papal name Pope Leo XIV. His election follows the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The conclave, held in the Sistine Chapel, concluded swiftly with white smoke signaling the election of a new pope .
