Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., has been elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the papal name Pope Leo XIV. His election follows the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The conclave, held in the Sistine Chapel, concluded swiftly with white smoke signaling the election of a new pope .

Cardinalate: Created a cardinal by Pope Francis on September 30, 2023

Significance of His Election
Pope Leo XIV's election marks a historic moment as he becomes the first American-born pope in the history of the Church. His background in both diocesan leadership and Vatican administration positions him as a figure with a comprehensive understanding of the Church's global and institutional needs. His appointment as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and his role in the Pontifical Commission for Latin America highlight his influence in shaping the Church's approach to episcopal appointments and its engagement with Latin American communities .

As pope, Leo XIV is expected to continue the pastoral and reformative directions set by his predecessor, Pope Francis, while addressing the evolving challenges of the 21st century Church.
